I want to travel from Berlin to Hamburg on Sunday (15 October). I have 49 Euro Deutschlandticket and was expecting to travel via some regional train for free but I see only ICE/IC trains are available on Sunday.
I feel tricked because I remember, back in the days (before Deutschlandticket) there were daily ‘direct’ regional trains between Berlin and Hamburg with ticket around 20 euros.
Why do these regional trains not exist anymore?

Because you didn’t check the ‘local transit only’ button when looking for trains.
There are lots of regional trains. Look again.
The direct IRE was discontinued in December 2021.

The announcement leaves open the possibility of it returning in 2024, [although that doesn’t seem likely](https://www.tagesschau.de/wirtschaft/verbraucher/bahnstrecke-zwischen-hamburg-berlin-monatelang-gesperrt-100.html); the schedule for December 2023-2024 is announced on Wednesday.
