The US library system, once the best in the world, faces death by a thousand cuts

  1. It’s easier to rule over an uneducated populace. GOP is following a standard autocratic playbook.

  2. In Missouri, republicans in the legislature cut off funding for libraries after libraries fought against book bans

  3. I feel like libraries have served their usefulness. What are they even used for anymore? You can fit an entire building full of books on one kindle.

  4. It’s that bastard child Jesus who keeps mucking everything up. If his father wouldn’t have gone out for milk and never returned the world would be a better place.

  5. Republicans can’t win if voters are educated. I’m gonna take a wild guess and say funding for religious schools are at an all time high.

  6. another thing republicans broke so they can say its broken.

  7. Republicans have turned into the taliban burning books and trying to indoctrinate kids with religion in publicly funded schools

I’m a Christian and independent and even I feel the churches play the role of sharing the gospel but it should not be forced onto the public institutions

  8. When your ideas and beliefs fail on the open marketplace because people reject them, remove all competition. 🙄

  9. Walk the corner to the rubble
That used to be a library,
Line up to the mind cemetery now

  10. Could describe a lot of things in this country tbh.

  11. Yet another thing great about this country that Republicans seek to destroy

  12. I knew this was gonna happen. I knew the GQP was going to kill the libraries.

Keep your physical books, everyone, before you can’t

  13. If only a centi-billionaire wanted to help out libraries again

  14. A fucking disgrace.

As a kid, as someone who has felt the hardships of loneliness and as someone who had a hard time connecting with people, libraries were the saving grace of my academic years. They were the thing that brought me comfort when my social failings became evident. I also read a lot and found a sanctuary to study and self-improve.

America’s libraries are under attack and the people who want to ruin them will stop at nothing to ensure that an intelligent citizenry go the ways of the dinosaurs.

  15. The conservative army is out to destroy EVERYTHING that made America great, while claiming to “Make America Great Again”. It is the greatest irony of our times.

  16. Everything the Republicans do when they’re in office makes us collectively dumber. It’s a strategy

  17. That’s how everything has been whittled away. Education, libraries, public tv. It’s all getting that slow but ever present chipping away. It’s terrible. This is stuff you rely on as lower and middle class citizens to enrich yourself with knowledge. If I can reverse anything in my life, it will be this shit. I benefited so much as a technically low income kid, and I made huge strides. With out this stuff idk how I would have gotten anywhere.

  18. Just like the PO, and Social Security, and Unions, and Medicare..We need to stop this right wing legislated country soon even if we kick some assholes in the crotch, come on… you with me?

  19. I’m glad to see you all got the same talking points. Just because you all say it over and over again doesn’t make it true. Yes people are dumb. Yes they are uneducated. No it’s not because the local library took a few gay books out of the children’s sections. There is plenty of gender/gay stuff in the adult section so settle down.

Plus, everyone has a phone. If you live in texas, you can sign up to get a Houston Public Library card. They have thousands if not hundreds of thousands of ebooks and audiobooks you can check out. There are countless news sites too. Blaming Republicans for people being stupid is kind of…well…stupid. Use your brains people.

  20. Digital licensing issues, book banning, rampant cuts to funding…also worth mentioning that, with all of this, it’s really not a good time to be a librarian. I speak from experience. A lot of excellent librarians are burning out and leaving the profession in droves.

It’s not good when those of us who have fought for libraries, crafted collection development policies, developed/curated collections, and who keep the places running are worked into the ground and running on empty and eventually just deciding they can’t do it anymore. And I’m talking some REALLY badass librarians, burning out and finding different professions – I know them firsthand and it is a huge loss to the public.

I’ve been a public librarian for over a decade, and I genuinely fear that American public libraries as an institution are just collapsing. I’ve been asked to do more and more with less and less every year for the entirety of my career, and I’m not alone.

Library staff are breaking. Books are being banned. Budgets are being cut. Corporations are fighting the idea of libraries “owning” and lending (or even using) digital materials.

    Libraries are fucked right now.

They’re just withering and dying, and it’s so depressing because I’ve been such a lover of libraries for my entire life. It’s heartbreaking
