Over in this part of the country fireworks were legal at midnight. Decent turnout though not as much as pre-covid but one thing I noticed is that 2 or 3 people a few blocks over were setting off what looked like large shells (“mortieren”). Unlike the traditional rockets or the cakes that fire loads of smaller fireworks, these are large single-shots that explode into a large ball. ([Example video](https://youtu.be/YPAXDb1JABo?t=143)) They basically fill half the night sky when they go off. Beautiful, but dangerous. Several weren’t launched correctly.
And that’s the thing: I thought those were illegal here? From what I know these kinds of mortar shells are strictly reserved for professional use, and for good reason. Did anyone else see fireworks like these this year? Are they being sold (illegally) in Belgium now? Or were we perhaps visited by Dutch pyro fans?

We had some dutch (confirmed when my old man decided to go tell them to cut it out and almost got into a fight with them) invaders with shit like this.
I had to work on NYE. Traditionally, the colleagues and me go to one of the high points of the plant and check out the fireworks. We thought it’d be quite boring this year.
We were wrong. And, yes, quite some large ones too! This is the area around Leuven.
