HSE hired five times more senior managers than doctors, report shows

  1. If they don’t spend all the money on managent and consultancy then who will be able to work out how they went over budget without hitting service levels?

  2. Paul Reid gets a full-time army driver to drive him from his home to his work in case he gets tired.

    Extraordinary stuff, really.

  3. They all see themselves as board members of a corporation; their job is to hand out contracts to consultants. This goes for most state organisations and it isn’t unique to Ireland either.

  4. As soon as Australia/New Zealand open up for Visas again there is going to be a massive exodus of nurses from the country. Emergency Departments are running on fumes at this point.

In Sligo Hospital a new ED building has been completed but is sitting empty this past month because there aren’t enough nurses to run it. The existing ED is meant to be staffed by 12 nurses daily, but they only have 6 these days. So they don’t even have enough to run the smaller ED safely, let alone the new build.

  5. All I got from this article is that journalism/media in this country continues to suck. It’s just a report given to the HSE transcribed and given a click bait title.

Without context, that number of hirings over a two month period could be significant. Without context it means nothing. Too much to expect the health correspondent to add that context?

The small team of Irish correspondents the SundayTimes have assembled are basically the only ones carrying journalism in this country.

  6. *in the second quarter of last year.

I mean, I’m quite sure the HSE doesn’t spend money efficiently. But this headline is more bullshit fury farming.

During a three month period something happened. Is this the broader trend? What happened over a full year or three years?

  7. These sort of headlines are click-bait in my opinion and not useful.

Maybe the service needs senior managers to sort it out. For a start I imagine it has probably added a few expensive IT heads after the ransomware nightmare.

Proper journalism would look at who was hired, where they have been allocated, and how the HSE compares to well-run health systems elsewhere in the world.

  8. The thing is………who gives a fuck anymore. Irelands going to do nothing about it….. Just like we will do nothing about the shambles that is housing, healthcare, Insurance racket, the Justice system and everything else thats a fucking shambles in this country……..

  9. That’s in one three month period.

Doctors and dentists will also generally tend to be doctors and dentists for life. Plus big portion of doctors and dentists are private so just not under HSE’s remit.

Managers will generally hop between industries and employers. HSE has a more cornered market on healthcare professionals.

  10. People will defend this too. But the amount the Irish government gives to NGO’s is also a scandal. Build the HSE from the ground up to deliver services, cut out the top and let NGO’s work from donations. Then give these savings back to the people of Ireland.

  11. Overinflated management and middle management has always been a problem with the hse and nepitism, employing people far out of their depth because daddy got them in

  12. I work for the HSE, in my old job(also HSE) I had a manager who had a manager who had a manager, to manage a team of 4.. they literally had nothing to do. All lower to mid tier management. They spent a lot of time having “meetings” creating work and changing responsibilities for us. All it did was make a team that really hummed into one where there was alot of discontent.

  13. Becuase of management’s incompatency we have to go through series of lock downs, if they’d increased the capacity of ICUs and hired more front line staff we wouldn’t be in the mess we are today. I cannot belive Paul Reid getting paid 420K. That is criminal

  14. Dont they also have a bunch of employed managers that they cant fire because of a contract from the old healthcare system so they literally get payed a large wage for existing?

Yes, lets hire more managers, and more, and wait no those managers need a manager too, forget about the 2 year waiting list for the anorexic teenage girl who desperately needs therapy, she can wait. I think we need another manager

  15. HSE needs complete restructure a lot of inflated salaries, doctors and nurses need to be valued more and given better conditions I sympathise anybody working in healthcare
