[I made a post](https://www.reddit.com/r/cyprus/comments/16k8thi/google_maps_are_outdated_as_fuck_but_we_can/) a few weeks ago about how Cyprus is uneditable on google maps and it’s becoming an issue especially now that there’s new roads added/closed daily, since 99% of delivery businesses use google maps and keep getting lost constantly.

Well, after some fiddling around I found out that if you go to the british controlled areas, you can edit/delete/add/mark as closed any road freely. This leads me to believe that indeed it’s our government that probably placed restrictions on editing being available to the public, so google probably has no say in it and it will remain that way indefinitely. Most probable reason I can come up with is they thought that protects the locations of our military bases.

The funny thing is, you can still add a pin where everyone can see and name that pin (names of locations). So technically anyone could pinpoint every single military base. But our genius boomers in the government thought that shooting ourselves in the foot by preventing adding/editing roads in an app used by almost every delivery business in the country would help national security somehow.

In the meantime, google maps in Cyprus continues to be 3+ years old outdated, and government owned maps available to the public are just as outdated. Anyone has any idea which ministry would most likely be responsible for this genius measures so we can contact the relevant people and maybe push for change? Would it be the [department of lands and surveys](https://portal.dls.moi.gov.cy/en/)?

  1. BTW you can still submit feedback on bad directions e.g. when Google Maps tells you to turn right but it is not allowed.

  3. Google Maps almost killed me up in the Cedar Forest. Better off asking goats for directions in Cyprus.

  4. I told the public transport to even add the bus routes on maps,but no reply.

    Think of all the tourists that arrive in Cyprus and want to take a bus. No way would they know that you have to download our special Pame app

I heard once that, many years ago now, there was some spat where people from both sides of Cyprus, so RoC and TRNC, decided to edit each other’s roads out of existence, or something similar, and that prompted a locking of the ability. Not sure if that was just some hot gossip but honestly it seems to me like something we’d do…
