  1. “Despite a high-profile state apology for Australia’s treatment of Indigenous groups in 2008, O’Sullivan said “a ‘no’ vote would very, very firmly and loudly say ‘we’re not sorry”

Fuck Australia. May its beautiful yet chaotic and deadly ecosystem overtake you.

  2. Before everyone condemns us as racist, if you actually look into this you’ll see that indigenous Australians already have equal rights and this is about giving them something *extra* above everyone else based only on their ethnicity.

There are a host of other problems with this amendment, but that is largely the main reason it’s being rejected.

  3. Extra elected representation if you’re the right race.

    Fuck that.

  4. I’m on the yes vote, so I’ll give my perspective.

While I do believe that indigenous rights and individual representation have improved alot in Australia, there are still communities that struggle with the preservation of their culture and traditions, especially in remote areas, and I think many of these communities need something like “the voice” for these issues to be addressed, especially in areas where they have historically been denied funding.

That said, I’m not voting for labor next election because the party has proven incompetent and this whole campaign has been self sabotaged by them. The lack of communication and details by the labor party has doomed this campaign.

  5. Aboriginals are already over represented in representation in government and have countless programs setup. This ‘voice’ is about introducing woke values opening the door for division and reparations.

They haven’t even formally announced what we are voting for which is a huge red flag. A ‘voice’ could easily be given on legislation without the expense of writing it into the constitution.

  6. Aboriginals already have equal rights. In fact they are being recruited specifically by companies to increase diversity. The ones who are hard done by are doing it to themselves at this point. If you are a white Australian doing it hard it’s the same thing.

  7. Not to mention the amount of people who have been “faking” to be Aboriginal and are some of their loudest “voices”.

  8. It’s racist to not put indigenous people on a pedestal and give them extra benefits based on the colour of their skin… /s

  10. This reads more like an opinion piece than a news story.

Two sentences on the “No” side, including the clearly neutral phrase “and by embracing uninformed voters…”

Most of the rest is the views and opinions of the “Yes” side.

  11. “A recent Resolve poll showed the ‘no’ vote leading ‘yes’ by 56-44.”

12 points lead. It is not even close.

  12. It’s just an advisory board – all these people pretending it gives them extra rights are straight up lying.

An advisory board to guide the government on issues that relate to indigenous people.

There is plenty of information for those who want to know but most have stuck their heads in the sand and opened their ears to the lopsided mainstream media who have ferociously campaigned against it.

  13. Personally, I am voting Yes this weekend. In the course of my research I found that the concept of the Voice has been in development for a very long time. Different working groups and committees commissioned by several different governments – both LNP and Labor – were tasked with examining how we can “close the gap”, and the work of each one led to the same place.

This is what our First Nations are asking of us, and I believe it is a positive step forward. Rather than divide, to me it feels like it’s bringing us closer together.

  14. This whole thread is some kind of Australian astroturfing campaign against this referendum, it seems. My right wing bullshit meter is off the charts with the way some of these replies are worded and phrased.

  15. Please don’t listen to some of these comments. Some media groups have done a fantastic job of spreading misinformation on this.

All this is, is an advisory group for First Nations issues. Very similar to other such groups already in place, such as the Climate Change Authority. All they can do is inform the government, the government does not have to act on anything these groups say.

People saying this is an extra right for First Nation peoples are being stupid, white people already have their advisory group, it’s called the government………….

  16. Sometimes equality doesn’t mean equal rights. Centuries of oppression doesn’t go away with “equal rights”. They’d need a little more push.
