Slow drivers in Ireland why do you only speed up when you see this sign?

  1. Just to show you that I could have gone faster, I just didn’t feel like it

  2. Ah, wider road. Time to open the taps on the 1.2.

  3. There are two of those overtaking lanes from Mallow to Cork City and I’ve seen this occur. It’s very infuriating

  4. My favourite is putting the foot down on a straight

  5. Tbh I just do it to see how red the fella behind can go.

  6. Slower drivers who take it as a personal slight if you overtake them really wreck my head.

  7. To show you I can go faster, but that I just wasn’t bothered to.

  8. oh, i have a speedometer.

oh im actually going 30 below the speed limit? better speed up

oh i have a really powerful modern car so can accelerate faster than you can, good you can catchup eventually and wont notice that i have sped up by a lot.

oh lane is finished. better focus on the road and not look at my speedometer again for the rest of my journey.

nobody wanted to overtake me anyway. these 10 cars behind me are all going the same speed as me.

  9. Who’s arse were you driving up this morning?

I’d guess what happened was you were driving so close to someone that they either slowed down to annoy you or slowed down to create a safe braking distance so they wouldn’t get rear ended by you if they had to stop suddenly.

Either way, when the other lane appeared, the need to slow down disappeared with you as you drove off towards the horizon.

  10. Get where you’re coming from and to a large degree completely agree. That being said, I know someone personally who always speeds up and I asked why once while their passenger.

He said he does it because he feels safer at higher speeds on a wider road.

Not saying the above is right or wrong (or even makes sense) but it’s not always small dick syndrome. People are strange and who tf knows individual reasonings.

  11. Conversely, they slow down for the M9 junction off the M7 where two lanes change to four

  12. Happens in Canada too. Like magic. Front of the pack Cars get an extra 40 HP boost when this sign is displayed

  13. Or pull to the right and match the speed of the lorry on the inside! Biggest gripe is driving from Waterford to Limerick. Only 1 place to pass the whole way at one of these, but they put a roundabout sign 3km before so everyone pulls to the right.

  14. I always think it’s because they don’t want to be overtaken. You’ll stay in your place, right behind me! But then, I’m a bitter man.

  15. Nervous drivers feel more confident going faster on straight and wide roads. Straight and wide roads are also the only real opportunity to overtake. Therefore, it’s going to look like a slower driver is speeding up every time you try to overtake.

I’m sure there are some drivers with less pure motives, but I’m sure that explains most of it.
