Criminals who abuse or attack shop workers must face automatic jail terms, says Union boss

  1. They’re very different things.

Abuse is part of the job for people in public facing roles, and it’s up to the staff to deal with it. No harm done.

Anyone who attacks someone in a shop should definitely be guaranteed to face consequences.

  2. No, Abuse is not part of the job.

It’s never okay and yes, it does cause alot of harm.

  3. The problem is, you absolutely do not deserve prison time for being “abusive”. That’s just ridiculous.

“abusive” falls under a large spectrum of actions from throwing stock on the floor, shouting at a worker who won’t provide a refund, to smearing shit over the shelves.

Most of what this subreddit would define as “abuse” would be classed as a civil conflict between the business and the individual. You really can’t do much in a shop that would involve the police as an ordinary customer.

  4. I was accused of theft, I asked to see the evidence of what they claimed, they refused to show me. I was then told I was in the day before and stole alcohol, which again I said you’ll have CCTV of it, show me. They brought the police, police got to see the footage and said that it clearly wasn’t me as I wasn’t same shape or height and had different hair! The manager then demanded I apologise for causing all this trouble and I said I didn’t cause it, your lying bitch of a staff member and yourself did that.
I’m banned for life, so sometimes you need to go mad at them because they’re wrong. I’ve worked retail, you don’t fucking accuse customers of shit unless you catch them red handed.

I only went in to top up my electric and had to deal with all this shite because a staff member decided to be an asshole.

I’ll admit, thats a rarity and you should treat people with respect, they’re just doing a job. But that doesn’t give them excuses to be assholes without consequences.

  5. I mean I’ve been assaulted and had to involve the police 3 times at work in the emergency department, only one made it to court and the perpetrator got fined £50 which they never paid, so good luck with that.

I’ve seen colleagues get blood spat in their face, hair pulled, punched, kicked, bitten, not to mention all the sexist, racist, homophobic abuse that happens. There’s not enough police and not enough crown prosecution resources to manage this, the burden of evidence is very high and things get lost and cancelled just because of the huge crown prosecution backlog.

I don’t even think prison is necessarily the answer, but very strict probation conditions (mandatory drug and alcohol treatment to avoid jail, recommencement of anti-psychotics, anger management courses, curfews and exclusion zone enforcements) could hugely affect the burden on criminal services, health, social care, etc.

  6. Why is attacking a shop worker worse than attacking a landscape gardener

  7. We literally have less than 900 free prison spaces in the UK as of 2 days ago

  8. That’s great… What exactly does “abuse” cover?

Anyway, given there is not enough room in prison for paedophiles I don’t see how this will work.

  9. London is becoming lawless lately, people know they an get away with any abuse or petty crimes so act with impunity.
