  1. Atrocious way to conduct a funeral for a grieving family

  2. Jesus that’s a hard read.

The circumstances are awful and the Priest is an absolute Zealot.

    Awful for the family.

  3. That poor family. I do not buy the differing of cultures excuse; there are plenty of foreign born priests in Ireland these days who carry out their duties with respect for the deceased and their family.

  4. Headline should read “Very upset family blame everything on locum priest” There’s 2 sides to every story and the truth usually lies in between them.

  5. Seems like the beginning of the end for the church. Can’t even cover a removal and a mass on the same night and even when they do, they are horrifically out of touch with their congregation and 1000 year old cultural norms.

  6. I’m heading to Waterford, gonna go deck a priest.

    What a fuckin horrid prick.

  7. The Catholic Church ladies and gentlemen, they wonder why their numbers are dwindling. Their fondness for kids and general lack of compassion.

  8. What a terribly sad story altogether. James looks very kind; strikingly so. Life can be so bloody hard.

  9. **Death of James**

Family ask for a welfare check on 25th August, when the welfare check reveals that James had already died and been in the Dublin morgue since the 19th of august. Then they had to take a DNA test on August 29th, in order to view his remains. They got to bring him home on the 15th September. James was kept in the morgue for 27 days till he could be retuned home.

    **Terrible priest**

“When we arrived at the church gates the priest that was conducting the service met us but he wasn’t dressed as we expected and was wearing a Fila top, jeans and trainers,”

Priest blamed the family on the suicide of 2 of their brothers: “He said on two occasions that the family could have done more and he also said that Jamie wasn’t sick,” said Monica. James’ passing wasn’t the first time a family member died in tragic circumstances as another brother, Patrick, also died tragically, in 2017, and that was something the priest also brought up in the church.

The priest said the family weren’t in regular contact with him, which Billy said was completely untrue and something that also caused them great upset.

“Two members of the family actually went to get up and say something and they had to be restrained because we couldn’t believe what we were hearing,” she said.

Priest sent an apology letter blaming his fuck ups on being Christian instead of Catholic.

    **Apology**

“Accept once again, sincere and hearty condolences following the demise of our beloved brother and friend, James Weldon. My attention was called to the manner in which I celebrated the funeral rites of James Weldon on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at 12 noon. Although the rites of Christian burial are the same in the Catholic Church, the expression of these vary from one culture to the other. Coming therefore from a different culture, I wish to sincerely apologise if the manner of which I conducted the rites upset any member of James’ family.

“Once more, I am deeply sorry and stand to be forgiven. I will continue to pray for the repose of the soul of our brother and friend James Weldon. Eternal rest grant upon him o Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him, may he rest in peace. Amen.”

    Total shit show

  10. The poor family – they really should have been informed of their family member’s death sooner. I understand that there are necessary protocols for identifying the body, but they should have been told of their options (e.g. 5 weeks for public DNA testing – private companies could be faster at a cost).

Regarding their grievances relating to the priest, someone who attended the funeral [appears to have addressed it in another subreddit](https://reddit.com/r/AskIreland/s/3LNzGoCoIr)
