I’ve heard him talk in commentaries about how Clerks was a incredibly successful independent film, but since Mallrats was a studio film, it was harder to keep the same level of creative freedom.
The studio actually wanted to remove Jason Mewes, and have someone else play Jay. I think it was Seth Green, if I remember correctly.
Kevin Smith had to prepare Jason Mewes for his first day, and help him get his acting perfect. He wasn’t allowed to muck around and needed to memorize his lines, because higher ups were watching, and ready to replace him at the first sign of trouble.
On the other hand, the studio did give some good advice. Kevin’s original opening was this long, drawn out scene at a dinner party. Luckily, the studio got him to cut it because they thought in a movie called Mallrats, they should get to the mall in the first ten minutes.
So is FACTZ the new TMZ?
First, it’s wild that u/lamasrichie is disrespecting his fellow New Jersian by posting a clickbait headline like this.
Second, it’s dirty business posting your own TMZ knockoff links in the entertainment sub like we wouldn’t notice. Do better.
These guys trying to milk their limited success until it’s dry
Don’t even understand why this would be considered newsworthy in the first place. Smith has talked extensively for nearly 20 years about exactly what went down with that movie, and anyone alive and paying attention to his movies at the time also knew this.
