Unfortunately government/HSE policies are in a huge way responsible for this. There used to be several charities that helped with this, but a massive level of overregulation basically shut them down, or made their continued existence/growth impossible.
The policies have good intentions, but implementing them without first creating different options is a fuckin joke.
I’ve a brother (33) with Down syndrome. I am his only sibling (27). I don’t have any hope for any form of residential care in the future. He will be in my parents care for the duration of their lives and then I will have to take over. I adore my brother with every piece of my being but I know how hard it will be to take care of him as he ages with no support. I fear it. I’m one of many siblings in this position and it’s awfully sad.
Sure we haven’t even had respite in 4 years never mind residential, not one short break in 4 years. Thank god he’s easy going.
Also you know those school leavers we seen back in September on rte with no places? Same story every year, happened to us 16 years ago. We had to fight hard to a service provider to accept him in adult services.
Few adults with intellectual disabilities receive any form of training for work. They have the ability and motivation but they’re failed and not given the proper training. 90% of adults with Down syndrome in Ireland are unemployed.
Adult disability day services have no official governing body to regulate and investigate safe guarding failings. HIQA’s remit only covers residential and restbite care. If a serious incident takes place in an adult day service it’s up to the service provider to do their own investigations and sure they’re always going to say they’re not the blame and no changes are made. I can’t give away my anonymity but my brother has been a victim of repetitive personal care/safeguarding failings in his day service. The care incident happens and because no official body comes in to investigate nothing changes and the same issue arises again and again. I’m short of pulling my hair out over it.
This government don’t give a fuck about disabilities. They never have and never fucking will. No political party whether government or opposition truly cares but my god they love their photo ops to pretend that they do.
I’m sick of it all. I’ve watched my parents fight for my brothers basic rights mine and his whole life. It’s disgusting and disheartening knowing nothing is going to ever change. I’ve hounded politicians and even met the various ministers of disabilities in official meetings to try push for change. They act like they care but they don’t.
