What an odd about-turn from Starmer. He was quite consistent on international policy usually, even willing to condemn crimes from allies, and was a strong proponent for referring Russias crimes in Ukraine to the ICC. For him to suddenly defend a clear war crime is just … not a good look. Is this posturing for the election?

This is objectively the case. Sieges are legal. What isn’t legal is preventing civilians from leaving a siege. War crimes are not just ‘anytime something bad happens to civilians during a war’. You are allowed to besiege enemy forces, and if they embed themselves along civilian populations that means besieging those civilian populations.
Israel have the right to deal with those terrorists as they see appropriated.
