Fully agree. We need doctors, so why not make it easier without reducing the quality of qualification?
I’m an undergraduate medical student. Thankfully, I don’t have to pay the exorbitant fees compared to my graduate entry peers, but I still struggle immensely to pay my expenses and fees as I come from a pretty poor background and cannot get financial support from home. This is even with the SUSI maintenance payments, which I am grateful to have, but they do not cover everything that I need for university, and I live a pretty simple life with hobbies that cost next to nothing. It feels like an additional worry that most of my classmates don’t have to deal with due to their backgrounds, as almost all are from decently well-off families. I’m extremely grateful to be here, as it’s been my dream for many years to be a doctor, but I find it sad that socioeconomic status is such a big determining factor for those who enter medicine.
