  1. Fraud costs retail £1bn a year

    TESCO PROFITS: £2.8bn

    Sainsbury’s profits £700m

    Asda profits £900m (and managed a £2bn dividend 🫤)

    Morrisons profits £828mn

So sure it’s a lot of crime, but even for the big 4 it’s less than 20% of the ‘profits’.

  2. Out of interest, has there been any study into the impact of self-checkouts on theft?

  3. Wonder if they’ve tried paying people enough so they don’t have to claim benefit, or lowering prices?

  4. Retail here from Waitrose, JL and Tesco:

We need the police to step in. You deter these thefts by a counter response, which currently doesn’t exist. It should be as simple as catching the thief on CCTV and a large fine coming through the post like you’d get in a private car park.

While people are poor, they’ll steal. £200 of goods is 20 hours they don’t have to work, and most people would rather barge past an employee who won’t stop them than work 3 extra shifts at their job.

  5. >”What’s that? You want us to defund the police even more?”

    -Tories

  6. Who would have thought 13 years cuts of social care, and services (police, NHS, etc) would have resulted in a breakdown of society.

“The police of perfectly funded for their service needs, if you think that you need more you should hire private security” – The Tories.

  7. Maintaining society is expensive but not as expensive as not doing it.

When we reach this state of semi-collapse we are talking of a solid decade of work to turn it around. It’s weird how nearly everyone forgets this, every single time.

  8. Screwfix, Argos, and Toolstation just sitting back laughing.

To be clear I’m saying that shops that have the stock behind the counter is where we are heading.

  9. No surprise really almost all food has gone up but 100% or more. Someone’s making a fortune off of this. A tin of soup £1.70! Even the own brand ones are £0.75. Used to be £0.90 and £0.45, on top of that the quality has fell off a cliff so you pay more for less product of lower quality. The average family that can’t afford these prices are being ignored and forgotten, when they fall into poverty what do you expect them to do but steal?

  10. If only the Tories hadn’t spent 13 years cutting funding of the courts, CPS, police, prison services, probation services to the point where they no longer function properly.

The people who work in the justice system are trying to do their job despite our politicians. Like the NHS they are not failing, they are being failed.
