This was never about incentivizing quality and art; it’s always been about content to wave around for subscriptions.
I cancelled my Netflix last month. Bye.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said that the request by actors was “a bridge too far to add deep into the negotiations right now,” during a conversation with *Bloomberg* journalist Lucas Shaw on Thursday morning at the Screentime conference in Los Angeles.^1
Talks broke down over the request.^2
Sarandos previously expressed empathy for striking workers, at an earnings call:^3
>“I was raised in a union household,” the Netflix co-CEO declared at the top of the streamer’s latest earnings call this afternoon.
>“My dad was a member of IBEW Local 640, he was a union electrician,” the Phoenix, Arizona-born Sarandos said. “And I remember his local because that union was very much a part of our lives when I was growing up.
>“And I also remember on more than one occasion, my dad being out on strike. And I remember that because it takes an enormous toll on your family, financially and emotionally.”
I said the same thing when Netflix stopped being 9.99
Fuck Ted. Fuck all of them. They will raise prices to more than cover what they are paying out. Some people will cancel, most won’t.
Where does the extra money come from? I could see this making sense if the streaming services was an a la carte setup for extra money is being spent to watch that specific program. But if no new subscribers join the service and people watch 100,000,000 hours of your show there’s no new revenue generated…
