The psychological & financial issues the app has been causing is worrying.
Has she been spending a lot of money on the app?
Money that she might not have?
I’ve found with my own mother that the older generation are painfully unequipped to resist predatory online practices
We all want to shop like a billionaire.
Wow….8.5 hours…that’s quite something
At least it’s not Facebook I guess
Introduce her to Korean dramas on Netflix, my mother is hooked. Just walking around the house watching them on her phone without knowing a single word of Korean.
I was about to say that’s not too bad for a week,, but then I realised it was a day.
Tell her that Temu uses literal slave labour to keep their prices down. If she has a conscience this may help wean her off.
You might already know this, but if you didn’t, it’s a lot more than just a shopping app. It probably goes without saying that it’s farming every inch of data it can get, but it’s also got a multi level marketing type of system going on that rewards you for farming your friends and bringing them on board. Even in a world filled with dodgy apps, it’s kinda worse than a lot of them. I suggest maybe looking into it a little more and trying to get the issues across to your mam.
This is a little upsetting, I feel for you OP – It’s hard seeing parents and others become victims of the onslaught of targeted ads we get online nowadays. My family grew up with not a lot of money so my ma had the same issue of buying tons of cheap shite from AliExpress and shein, just so she could feel like she “owned stuff” – even if the stuff fell apart after two uses. She grew out of it eventually after she realised prioritising one or two good purchases was a lot more satisfying than 10s of shitey things.
All that time spent on it and never once thought to buy a new phone?
I heard Temu are in serious legal trouble – they entice customers with discounts to buy on their app, but they make their money selling customers data rather than their products. Apparently they had another company under a different name that was shut down for the same bad business practices.
Breaking phones?
Shein is bad enough but id stay well clear of Temu I’ve seen too many accounts of them stealing from your bank account
Apparently they operate at a loss on selling products, and actually make their money selling users sensitive private data. Search temu spyware you should find some interesting stuff to send her to read
Take this down before the Social finds out she’s not really looking for a job
This is similar to slot machines in how it works
20 min to find a job, 8.5hrs to spend the wages.
Temu is just Chinese tat, and doing shady things like setting up shop in Dublin to avoid the connotations a Chinese company would have, and its connections to the CCP.
