I live in Oerlikon, Zurich, reason why it is in this subreddit.

Today, a neighbor told me she got her bike, a Canyon e-bike preced:on, stolen in the bike room, so in all good measures, I went to check if mine, a similar model but with step through frame, were still there.

Hopefully, it was there, but my 4 bikes I use to go to work were stolen 😭. One fitness bike with fenders when it rains, a BMC SLR02, a Rose Pro SL, a custom made frame [see picture]. All race bike had carbon wheelsets, with the new Continental GP5000 tires, and they were attached with the highest security abus locks with granit x plus and the bike room is locked. No tracker or air tag, nor specific insurance (probably I can get some money bike from the house insurance) because I had faith in humanity [I guess this anecdotal event will shape my vote, not UDC/SVP rest assured 😅].

Side note trackers are mostly useless against organized crime as criminals will remove your tag fairly quickly (since Apple and Google are nicely notifying them that a tracker is following them).

For the story I spent weeks assembling and building my bikes for my hobby, I was really proud of riding my red glossy Pikachu bike.

All in all, it is the first time in 15 years I get a bike stolen, but the 4 of them at the time just reduce the average lifespan to 3.75 years. I probably lost around 10k CHF in a single day 😖.

I am just disgusted that politicians are still allowing this to happen if they want us to use bike to go to work. They are no measure to prevent bike theft from criminal organisations in Switzerland, with a 1% of bike retrieval, this ridiculous.

Why am I writing this? Just to say that bike thefts are just the worst kind of shit and I hope if they ride my bikes that one of the cheap Chinese part will fail fatally [no racism, this is bike community joke, I have a lot of Chinese bike part that I will gladly ride, my next frame and wheelsets for example].

  4. I just got my bike stolen too on tuesday, my brother a few weeks back and I know of several other people who got their bike stolen in recently. Luckly I only got my “cheap” bike stolen (still cost 1k) and not my 4k MTB but it still sucks. But that’s nothing compared to the 4 bikes you got stolen.

    Apperently there seems to be a bike theft wave going around but police doesn’t seem to care so it’ll probably contiune as long as they can get away with it. My local railway station is getting a new bike locker thing with badge only entrance and security cams and I’ve heard rumours that they even want to staff it during the day so I hope that I can at least go to the railway station again (when I get a new bike).

    I just read in another sub of a guy who got his bike stolen and then found it on a serbian reseller site and he said he just entered the bike model and filtered for the last 24h so that might be worth looking out for in the coming weeks.

  5. Never leave your bikes in the bike room. I heard multiple times of people having their bike stole from there including neighbours. Buy one of those attachments amd hang your bike(s) at home. You learned the hard way.

  6. Report it to the police, then your insurance and you’ll get the money to get brand new bikes

  7. Move to a village. Our underground garage is shared across several houses, but a random person can’t get in. My kids often forget to lock their bikes, and I sometimes forget to lock my car. Nothing happened in 15+ years.

  8. u guys dont have any insurance? When its custom made it sucks but ohterwise i dont see any down side of getting a Bike stolen u can easly buy a new one without spending a $.
