Looks like it rotated around at one point, was there another line going a different direction here before?

  1. Kinda useful to turn the trains around. They’re not great at the 3 point turn.

  2. Steam engine turntable.

Used to turn a locomotive around when changing the direction of travel.

  3. Ah yes. My knowledge watching of Thomas the Tank engine has paid off.
It’s a Turn table. some engines would go into little huts or sheds. You can see the structure on the right is the ruins of the shed.

basically there is one rail, and the table rotates to put each engine into it’s designated shed. It also helps turn them around in case they need to go in reversed or forward

  4. It’s a train turntable. Old school engineers swear the trains sound more real when using the turntable.

  5. Apart from the turntable to turn the engine, there is a water tank to refill the boiler on the steam engines.

  6. It’s where Thomas the Tank Engine used to be c filmed

  7. OP knows it’s a train turner. OP wants to know about its history.

  8. As others have said, it’s a turntable for rotating locomotives from the old days, but I swear I can also remember when it used to be connected to the tracks that there was a service / maintenance vehicle that used to sit on it for when trains broke down / tracks needed clearing. It was small and yellow, you still see it zipping around occasionally but I suppose the turntable was either impractical due to being on a platform track or just wasn’t maintained properly so they stopped keeping it there and disconnected the tracks.

  9. One answer is turntable for trains, another answer is decades of public service corruption and underinvestment.

  10. It would turn the engine around to face the other direction as the old engines went fastest facing forward

  11. It’s a g-force training device used by the Irish Space Corps. It’s been a while since we launched any leprenauts.

  12. Turntable for steam engines that would have ran there in the day, the water tower is sat pride of place next to it as a matter of fact

  13. The used it to turn on train carts around very cool

  14. Obviously you didn’t watch Thomas the Tank Engine as a child 🤣
