Bought the same usual chocolate bar I’ve been buying from Lidl for the past year or so for my girlfriend with a nut allergy. Didn’t pay any mind to it.
Fast forward 15 minutes, she’s opened and tried a square and starts having an allergic reaction.
Turns out the “new recipe” disclaimer in top left failed to mention that it contains hazelnut paste now, as did the entire front packaging of the “milk chocolate”.
Favourite 50p chocolate bar forever gone just like that. Shame.

I would write a very measured letter to Lidl. They could kill someone with this nonsense.
Whenever packaging says “new recipe,” that is the time for people with allergies to _check the ingredients_, rather than just assuming all is still okay.
The guidance from anaphylaxis uk is that the you (the buyer) should be checking ingredients every time you buy a product.
> You will need to check food labels **every time** you buy a food as ingredients and labels can change from batch to batch
Whilst you can go ahead and complain to Lidl they’ve met their obligations by including a new recipe sticker. You’ll likely receive a small good will gesture.
You’re going to need to be far more careful doing shopping in future.
Always read the label and don’t assume recipes don’t change, or are consistent across a brand. I can eat most Maryland cookies but not the white chocolate ones, because they have oats in.
If i could be killed by something as simple as a chocolate bar ingredient, I’d like to think I’d pay more attention to things that say ‘new recipie’…
I still check the usual buys everytime. Welcome to life with an allergy person!
Ok everyone, provided that yes, OP should have checked, it’s up also to the chain to do something if the communications on the new changes is not clear enough.
u/aSingleLettuce, if you want to go ahead and put in a complaint, go to the corresponding page on the Lidl website and [fill in their form](https://customer-service.lidl.co.uk/SelfServiceUK/s/contactsupport). I contacted them a couple of years ago after one of their appliances died on me a couple of months after buying it and they’ve been really on it in making it right.
Of course, just be polite and it’ll go for the better. Sorry this happened to you and I hope your GF gets well soon.
I can assure you that particular chocolate bar has contained hazelnut paste since at least 2019, when I started buying it frequently and in bulk.
The recipe change was a slightly different form of vanilla.
Always read the label, and when ordering always tell food businesses you have an allergy.
Don’t all Alpine milk chocolates contain hazelnut paste? Isn’t it part of its whole schtick?
Oh I thought you meant lethal because it’s really nice!
Before I read the text I was thinking “lethal” was referring to all those red traffic lights for a serving size of four pieces.
Needs more salt
blindly eating stuff
blindly smoke something geez
These have always contained hazelnut paste.
100% on you fella
there’s not just one allergen, do they need a huge soya milk & peanuts symbol on the front ?
is it made with or in presence of ?
& now I’m gonna buy some as hazelnut sounds kinda nice
At the end of the day, if you have allergy, you should check every time it says new recipe. I check every time I buy something. There’s only so much companies can do then it’s down to the person. Plus Lidl chocolate is really good for the price.
Ah yes, the front of the packet should be a list of all the things that 0.1% of the population might be allergic to. Or you could just read the ingredients on the back…
