  1. Caswell, who was two months pregnant at the time, became one of a growing number of women imprisoned in the county in the name of protecting their “unborn children”.

  2. “Caswell was denied regular access to prenatal visits, even as officials were aware her pregnancy was high-risk due to her hypertension and abnormal pap smears, according to a lawsuit filed on Friday against the county and the sheriff’s department. She was also denied her prescribed psychiatric medication and slept on a thin mat on the concrete floor of the detention center for her entire pregnancy.”

  3. “I thought I’d lose my baby, my life, and never see my other kids again.”

  4. “Fetal personhood” wants to 1) define a fetus as a human, 2) give that human more rights to the body of the mother than she has

It was definitely wrong for her to be taking meth pregnant, but the solution is not to throw her in a concrete cage for 7 months and deny her any prenatal care. Its to send her to a facility that will help her with her addiction and give her the mental and medical care she needs.

These fucking shitheads don’t give a fuck about life. Its about control.

  5. I had to read this twice. WTAF? Again it’s not about abortion. It’s only about control! Women need to vote wisely.

  6. By their own rules, imprisoning a woman who is pregnant should be illegal because the fetus, as a person under the law, has been denied due process and been jailed for a crime they did not commit.

  7. This article was so infuriating I couldn’t finish reading it.

  8. They gave her 15 years in prison? She would have gotten less if she murdered someone.

  9. Laws written surrounding women’s healthcare are written by people who want babies born no matter what. This shit has gone too far. Are there laws regulating anything to a man’s healthcare whatsoever?

I don’t care what ‘sins’ this woman committed; she did not deserve to experience the absolute torture that she went through and which almost killed her. She is a human being. You can be mad that she was on drugs and leads a specific type of life, but it’s all a product of institutionalized poverty and designed the way it is on purpose. No one that has anything to do with any decision-making in 2023 cares whether anyone lives or dies – only the amount of money that can be made from entire groups of people. This is America.

  10. Gadsden Alabama is an absolute shithole even by Alabama standards

  11. This is the reality for many women living in Red states, right now.

  12. When did the Taliban take over part of the US? Did I miss something?

  13. Sure seems like the jail was trying to have the kid die so they could throw her into an even shittier situation.

  14. But please tell me how these fuckers in Alabama are pro-life

  15. I am once again imploring you to get your children, yourselves, and your money out of Gilead **while you still can**.

  16. I hope the people in charge of creating this law are justly punished for these human rights abuses. Criminally tried and sentenced to prison. This is absolutely insane treatment of women that doesn’t belong in this era. They don’t care about the baby or the mother, the women giving birth without access to hospital or prenatal care is concrete proof of it. Biden should be standing up against this crap.

  17. It’s difficult to comprehend what I’ve just read. This is straight out of a horror.

This ought to go nationwide and anyone in any capacity who worked that prison should go to prison themselves.

  18. This is how we know the GOP has no idea how to govern. They want to impose laws without having the infrastructure in place! Same with immigration – let’s just put blades on rope in the water and cut ‘em up! Their integrity is weak and transparent. They do all of this while cutting taxes, not for you or I, but for their rich pansies. You want to argue that point? Follow the money. The GOP shot down the bill to add transparency for corporate political donations and turned around started imprisoning women who went out of their state to get healthcare they needed. OBGYN’s left the entire state of Utah over the GOP indignant laws. They say they are for me, while stabbing me in the back with their anti-liberty laws.

  19. Well good thing Alabama is a “pro-life” state.

  20. In October, when her water broke and she pleaded to be taken to a hospital, her lawyer says, officials told her to “sleep it off” and “wait until Monday” to deliver – two days away.

This article is very disturbing. I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around what I just read.

  21. That was a horrible article to read, just at a loss for words.

  22. Good grief. Pregnant women who test positive for meth need drug rehabilitation treatment, not prison. If you want to charge then with something, the sentence should be rehab, time served.
