House Democrats flaunted their unity Friday, panning Rep. Jim Jordan, the Republicans’ newest nominee for speaker, while indulging in a bit of schadenfreude over their rival party’s dysfunction.
Government “hasn’t worked since January of this past year,” Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif., told The Messenger, alluding to the time House Republicans officially took control of the chamber after the 2022 midterm elections.“It’s been one dumpster fire to the next,” Gomez said. “It’s a dumpster fire with a train running over it and an explosion, right? So it is not good. Not good.”
Democratic leaders repeated their previous calls for bipartisanship as the House floor has remained paralyzed since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was ousted from his post last week. But they also spoke out against Jordan, R-Ohio, who was nominated for speaker in an internal House GOP election Friday, in a way they hadn’t done for McCarthy or Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., whose short-lived bid for speaker revived Jordan’s failed run this week.
“We wanna find a bipartisan path to reopening the House of Representatives so we can solve problems for the American people and stand with our friends like Israel, Ukraine and others throughout the free world,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said, flanked by dozens of his Democratic colleagues on the front steps of the Capitol. “But the House Republican civil war continues to rage on, miring the Congress in chaos, dysfunction and extremism,” he continued.
Party of family values nominates a man who knowingly allowed sex abuse of college students to occur.
How does anyone support these people?
The only person the Republican Party could come up with is Gym Jordan. Harrumph.
The fact that Republicans want to nominate an abuse-enabling sleezebag like Jordan shows exactly what kind of “values” they have.
I don’t think anyone wants voting for Gym Jordan on their record come election time.
The problem with that is …..
The majority of the GOP base are maga-republicans.
Any GOP House Rep steps out of line without benefit of being in a safe neocon district will get primaried and likely lose their seat in 2024. Neocons main objectives are to stay in power so keeping those seats are a bigger priority.
German / Alaskan style grand coalition parliament WHEN??
Just remember the longer this shitshow goes on, the less money we ship overseas.
So… Put Jeffries in there. You don’t have to agree with him him, you don’t have to vote with him, you still have a majority, since you can’t agree and you know democrats will agree on this, your problem is basically solved. I know y’all won’t, but you could and literally lose nothing for doing it, for now at least.
Just because the GOP nominated him doesn’t mean he’ll get the votes to be speaker.
In a wild scenario who would the Republicans even agree to nominate as speaker from the Dem side. Ed Case ?
Jeffries is the House member with the most votes for Speaker. Simple fact. Republicans hate that.
>House Republicans have selected as their nominee to be the speaker of the people’s House, the chairman of the Chaos Caucus, a defender in a dangerous way of dysfunction and an extremist extraordinaire.
Fueling factions fracture the body, and his governance grinds House harmony to a halt. His instability interrupts integral interactions, and Jordan jeopardizes Justice. His knowledge kindles conflict and launches legislative lunacy. Misinformation multiplies, and negligence nurtures nationalism.
Obstructions overshadow open order. Partisanship perpetuates, and quality questioning is quenched. Poisonous rhetoric radiates throughout the body, subverting society. False tales tarnish truth, and unity is undone. His venomous voice vandalizes the Congress, wielding words as weapons. Xenophobia is xeroxed. We will all yearn for the dialogue of yesterday, but zealotry will give us zero-sum politics.
No rational person can vote for a party that nominates Gym Jordan. Insurrectionist, election denier, and all around dumb guy.
