One of my friends served three tours in Iraq. The very first time he was shot at, he pissed his pants. It happens a lot. He didn’t become effective to his platoon until a few weeks later when he accepted that he was a dead man walking. Once he knew he was going to die, he was able to follow through on what needed to be done.
My friend came back, but he’s struggled with PTSD for around 15 years. He told me that you learn to see the bodies and, if you’re not tasked for recovery, you move on and complete the mission. If you’re constantly afraid of death, you will be ineffective and you’ll get your friends killed. This Russian certainly wasn’t around his friends, but even though he walked past the other body, perhaps of someone he knew, he had a mission to complete. He was working on it, and he died doing it.
