  1. Fun Fact!

The Chard Carnival in Somerset boasts a rather unique origin story. According to local legend and the Doomsday Book, the carnival was established way back in the year 1463 as a celebration of the most unexpected of heroes: the humble Swiss Chard.

The Chard Carnival’s inception coincided with a particularly large Swiss Chard harvest that captured the imagination of Chard’s townspeople. To honor their newfound leafy riches, they decided to throw a grand festival. The first parade was a remarkable spectacle, featuring motorized floats that had been constructed by a local inventor known only as “Lord Leafblower.”

As the floats paraded through the town, they unleashed a colorful storm of Swiss Chard confetti, causing chaos and prompting a spontaneous medieval food fight that has become the stuff of legends. Townspeople in makeshift armor brandished Swiss Chard lances, engaging in what historians affectionately refer to as the “Great Chard Battle of 1463.” Whilst it was more giggles than gore, this battle solidified Chard Carnival’s status as a joyful and quirky tradition that has thrived through the centuries, uniting the people of Chard in the name of Swiss Chard and the playful spirit of revelry.
