Since the GOP has shown themselves to be only a group of bad-tempered children with no desire to govern responsibly, the grownups gonna have to be the grownups.
Again.
Some things never change.
They should leak that Jordan has reached out to Dems just to create chaos.
“When we get back to Washington tomorrow, it’s important to begin to formalize those discussions,” he said. “From the very beginning of this Congress, House Democrats have made clear that we want to continue to put people over politics and to fight for things like lower cost, better paying jobs, safer communities, and to build an economy that works from the middle out and the bottom up. On the other hand, House Republicans have been focused on fighting each other.”
This is the way
Hakeem Jeffries says that “casual discussions” are occurring that could prompt a “bipartisan overseeing alliance” to choose a House speaker. In the wake of expelling previous Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his position of authority, conservatives in Congress have named Rep. Jim Jordan as his substitution, yet it’s hazy in the event that Jordan has the votes expected to get the position.
Should include ‘extremists’ from BOTH parties
I’m skeptical this will happen. The GOP have shown themselves to be duplicitous and childlike in their behavior. Let’s see if these so called moderate Republicans continue to pursue this once Trump and the right wing media ecosystem start battering them with attacks
far easier for Jeffries to get 20-30 ‘sane’ Republican votes than for Jordan to get the 50-60 hard no votes to flip
The MAGA caucus wants to use the House to scream and cry and campaign from the floor. But they’re in the majority. Anything they’re mad about is their own doing.
They don’t want to have to answer for anything they actually do, and they’re not interested in governing.
65% voted to not certify the election. basically 100% voted to acquit in impeachment(s)..Gonna be pretty hard to find someone who isnt an extremist in that party.
“If Republicans can secure the support of five Democrats, it could be possible to elect a speaker on a bipartisan basis.”
No they can’t and Hakeem knows this, by getting 5 dems to cross the aisle and making it mathematically possible, he will show that the Republicans are incapable of working with Democrats. Any Republican who gets 5 votes from Democrats will instantly lose more than 5 votes from the Republican caucus.
That would be amazing if there would actually be an adult compromise made there.
Well that’s a fucking breath of fresh air. Bipartisanship against extremists of all varieties should be a goal
I don’t think he would say this publicly if the talks weren’t pretty far along. It’s risky with no payoff unless it actually happens
This is the path to go. The Dems don’t need complete ownership, calls for Jeffries to be speaker are absurd. They need bi-partisanship and a deal with sensible republicans.
This is what’s best for the country.
If Jeffries pulls it off, he will deserve a lot of credit because stuff like that just doesn’t tend to happen in American politics
Jim Jordan would be bad news. I can’t believe what’s happened to the republican party.
If the dems don’t try to take advantage of this in some capacity it would be a big missed opportunity
Good!! Get em the fuck outta there
What an absolute embarrassment for Republicans.
Arnold Schwarzenegger for Speaker!! Lets call him the Speakenator!
Said extremists shouldn’t even be qualified to keep their jobs when most of us would be fired from regular jobs if we said half of the insane and flat out false shit they say on twitter daily but here we are.
Does anyone over at r/conservative care at all that their party is in shambles/actively trying to destroy the country’s government? Or are they crying about liberals saying free Palestine
The agreement should be that Jeffries is speaker, because even if there is a “bipartisan” agreement reached, the republicans will backtrack on it.
Lol the GOP is going to lose the Speaker position to a Democrat despite having a majority in the house. That is ineptitude at a remarkable scale.
Hope and pray all you want but for the past 15 years, the Republicans have never taken an opportunity to distance themselves from the extremists. You’re always safe betting against the GOP neutering the MAGAs/Freedom Caucus.
