Considering that it’s likely they need a Republican as Speaker for the 2024 election I’m not sure what the plan is for the GOP. They could work with Democrats and either make Jeffries the Speaker or offer concessions to get a more appropriate Republican in.
I think their strategy for the 2024 election is to interfere with it as much as possible and hope they can find a way to kick the determination to the House of Representatives. So then they can elect Trump without ever winning the votes. I am not sure it would even matter if a Democrat has the Speakership then, but I imagine it will.
The less radical republicans need to really do some fucking soul searching and decide to work with the Dems.

Who is surprised that the 3rd choice of a caucus that has a 5 vote majority is having trouble getting over the 50% hump? I for one am not. If McCarthy was the first choice and it took 15 votes, Scalise was the second and didn’t even get 2/3rds of the caucus, why on earth would Jim Jordan, the 3rd choice be able to sweep it up?

The problem with this is that Jordan was/is part of the group that gave McCarthy a hard time to get speaker and is the reason why there was a 1 call to oust a speaker agreement in the first place.
McCarthy allies has to be pissed about this and more likely even more pissed that a guy in that same group is even being considered as speaker. The freedom caucus has been nothing but problematic for the GOP as a whole. It’s an embarrassment to them right before election season.
If the GOP really want to save face, not have a long shutdown trying to go back and forth with speaker candidates that the entire party can’t even agree to. They need to work with democrats to get a speaker in place and give them time to figure things out. Otherwise if we go into a shutdown, people that are in a lean-R county will vote them out.
My conservative father was quite confident yesterday that they’d select a speaker this week. I told him I would be amazed if it happened any sooner than the week after that, but honestly… I could see us not having a speaker or a functioning house into November or even longer. I so hope the GOP suffer political/electoral consequences for this public incompetence and buffoonery
