Surprised there’s not daily accounts of death and serious injuries from scooters and bikes on footpaths.

  1. If there’s no enforcement of the laws then it’s “basically” legal.

  2. tbf the foothpaths are miles safer than the road , and its legal

  3. I was stopped at a light on my bike before and a guard pulled alongside and told me I should be using the footpath not blocking up a lane on the road. There was no cycle lane so maybe that’s what he meant but it seems even gardai don’t have a uniform view on the matter.

ETA: my understanding was that it’s illegal to cycle on the footpath but that whether or not you’ve broken any law is up to the discretion of whatever guard stops you. If this is the case it would go a long way in explaining why the law is not enforced.

  4. Probably because no one is dying from scooters and bikes on footpaths.

They are annoying and should be better policing and dedicated infrastructure thought.

  5. I like that the article rambles on about a number of different offenses committed by various groups on the road and then just says “Let’s focus on cyclists on footpaths first!” as if that were the logical place to start.

The logical place to start is to look at why a cyclist would be on the footpath in the first place. The answer there is a lack of infrastructure, poor infrastructure in the few places we do have it and drivers generally speaking treating cyclists with outright spite when cyclists do use the road, and I say all this as someone who drives.

  6. I think there should be an age limit. Small children should be on a path as its way too dangerous to let them cycle on a road, so if you ban them from the footpath you effectively ban children from cycling completely. They should have lessons in school too so they fully understand the rules of the road and then when they’re over a certain age it should be mandatory to stay off the footpath. In my experience teenagers are the most reckless cyclists. Most likely because they haven’t witnessed a major accident at that point and because they aren’t being taught how to cycle properly.

  7. In rural areas I don’t see any issue with this. In rural Ireland the roads are lethal for cyclists as they aren’t fit for purpose. The footpaths are barely used by pedestrians in rural area’s plus cyclists usually have plenty of time to come off the footpath if they do encounter pedestrians. This makes things safer for cyclists and drivers, with little to no issues for any pedestrians using the footpaths.

  8. How many people got killed by cars this week as pedestrians? And how many got killed by cyclists?

Change the narrative, its cars killing pedestrians.

  9. I was informed by a motorist that I should be cycling on the footpath and not cycling on the road.

I actually laughed at him for his stupidity.

  10. Just like parking, and it will never change , unfortunately.

  11. You’d risk death using most roads for cycling or on an escooter here.

  12. Even if there is a cycle lane right next to the path, the cunts use the path anyway. Might as well just have extended footpaths at this point xD

  13. It’s impossible to cycle on the footpaths here in Newbridge as they’re blocked with parked cars.

  14. I cycle a lot and the only time I really see bikes on the footpath is when it’s a very dangerous section of road

  15. In Cork City they force you onto footpaths from cycle lanes. In one place you have to cycle right through where people are waiting for a bus. It’s madness. Obviously designed by people that never cycle.

  16. I thought it would be common sense but cars are the real killers not bicycles..

Anyone directing attention to cyclists on footpaths deserves a kick up the hole. Thinking they’re wanting to make roads safer but are just lardarses scapegoating an age old easy target

  17. Constantly dodging electric scooters going full speed on the path every time I’m in town. Fucking joke

  18. I was walking in cork city last week on Sullivan’s Quay.

A lady rid her bike into a lady of the footpath beside me. Hurting her and falling off.

She was told by both me and the victim that there was a clear cycle path right beside her which there was. Segregated from both the road and the footpath by a barrier.

She told us to “fuck off” and rode her way back to her office job.

  19. Not going to be allowing my kid to cycle on the roads in Dublin.

And that means I’m cycling on the paths with them.

  20. Can you really blame them when the government is squandering millions in taxpayer’s money to put bike lanes on footpaths?

    Mixed signals much?

  21. Its so wild the hate people in cars have for cyclists, like I hate cycling but bikes were on the roads long before cars.

  22. I think you need to also focus on some of the councils that just paint cycle lanes on the pavement because they’re too scared to take space from cars or set speed limits safe for cyclists to share with cars to stop normalising that.

  23. Wow, finally a motorist is concerned about the safety of pedestrians… from cyclists 😂 Gimme a fkn break
