In relation to [Prince Christian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Christian_of_Denmark)’s 18th birthday, the Royal Palace has sent out invitations to two young people from each municipality in Denmark, as well as Greenland and the Faroe Islands, for the royal birthday gala.

Some municipalities have held a competition, while others have drawn lots to decide who should receive the invitations.

To the gala is also invited prominent figures, as well as representants for the royal houses of Norway, Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The media is sending live from the gala here: [DR](https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/indland/live-tv-prins-christian-fylder-18-aar) (with commentary from the studio), [TV2](https://nyheder.tv2.dk/live/2023-10-11-foelg-prins-christians-foedselsdag-her) (without commentary)

edit: And, holy moly, they are seating the members of all the royal houses, the queen included, in between the commoners! 😮🙂👍

edit2: The live transmission is over, but the party continues with bands and DJ until about 22 tonight, after which the young people are transported to their home areas.

  1. Sounds great. Who did we (🇳🇱) send? I’m a bit surprised by your surprise. If you hold a gala and invite 200 people, why wouldn’t the royals mingle with the other guests?

  2. Watched some of it earlier, and noticed a couple of people wearing traditional regional costumes, that was fun to see. 🙂

  3. The choirs singing at the gala are the [Copenhagen Boys Choir](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copenhagen_Boys_Choir) and the [Danish National Girls’ Choir](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLysPxrQwj2YfA1VqgOV-Ci_8EgGiNUKdh), of which Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary are protectors respectively.

**The first song** was “[Danmark, mit Fædreland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danmark,_mit_f%C3%A6dreland)” (Denmark, my Fatherland), also known as “I Danmark er jeg født” (In Denmark Am I Born). Which is a well known song in Denmark, from a poem of Hans Christian Andersen in 1850. The melody is from 1926 and the song have sometimes been suggested as a replacement for the existing Danish National Anthem.

An English translation of the text can be found [here](https://andersen.sdu.dk/rundtom/borge/danmark_e.html), and the Danish National Choir [performed it some months ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnguV67rdi4) as a part of a recent series called “The Danish Song”, where the audience is invited to participate.

**The last song**, when the cakes were brough to the tables, is a very normal Danish birthday song that you would hear in any Danish home all over the country. It makes the event very “down-to-earth”.

The saying is, that the candles you don’t blow out in the first try, is the amount of boy-/girlfriends you have, hence the laughter.

  4. Celebrating a most anti democratic system is just weird to me. Throughout history Monarchs absolutely stomped all over the common man, and now they march in their thousands to show support for this kid that hasn’t earned anything.

Monarchs have no place in a society that values equality.

  5. I’ve seen more fancy parties for 15 yo on third world countries

  6. I understand that the system of monarchy might reflect the will of the people, doesn’t mean it isn’t ridiculous

  7. In Spain the monarchy is very tied to Franco’s dictatorship. Only a few days ago, the princess pledged loyalty to whatever these fucks do next to a Francoist sign.

It baffles me to see other people supporting monarchies – but it’s up to the Danes to spend their resources in supporting what I deem as parasites.

  8. I’ve enjoyed reading about this – thank you. I hope everyone there has a wonderful time.

  9. I’m certainly happy for him, maybe bit envious, but hey, it comes with being a prince. I hope the gala went fine for all

  10. It’s quite cool that the guest list was somewhat open to more than the usual blue bloods.

  11. So 200 guests at his birthday party his doesn’t want there?

  12. I was in the city today walking around (as you do as tourist) when part of the military marching band came by. So my friend and I decided to follow along for a bit. Was good fun.

  13. Here is the translation of his birthday speech into English:

    **October 15, 2023 | Speech**

**H.R.H. Prince Christian’s Speech at the Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Palace on October 15, 2023, on the Occasion of the Prince’s 18th Birthday**

Ladies and gentlemen, Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, ministers, dear family, dear everyone – especially those of you who have come from all corners of the kingdom, two by two.

It is significant for me to stand here today.

Thank you, Grandma, for your kind words and this splendid celebration.

Thank you, Dad and Mom, for supporting me and being there for me every step of the way.

And thanks to all the young people here today. It feels really good to be surrounded by so many peers.

We are not the same, but we are at the same point in life. We have something in common. And tonight is new for all of us. That makes it a little easier. And that’s what I need right now.

Last summer, I was about to start my second year in high school at a new institution. I was nervous. Really nervous. Everyone in my new class had known each other for a year. I was the new guy.

So there I stood, heart pounding and mouth dry, on the threshold of something new. I pushed myself, said “hello,” and introduced myself to my new classmates. They welcomed me warmly, and step by step, I got to know the atmosphere, the routines, and the other students. Today, it’s hard to understand what I was so nervous about.

It happens often; we fear something in front of us, and as soon as we’re past it, it seems completely harmless. I remind myself of this when I get nervous. I reminded myself of this before I had to stand here today.

Because it’s significant to stand here with the country’s highest honor and a special responsibility resting on my shoulders. Fortunately, I don’t have to carry it alone and not from one day to the next. I am excited, but also secure and proud to be a part of my family, and I take pride in serving my country. So even though my hands are trembling a bit today, my heart is in meeting the future.

Many of us young people feel there are high expectations of us. Both from ourselves and from others. For many, these expectations turn into pressure.

Far too many feel they can’t live life the way they want. But in reality, we can only be who we are. Maybe you’re not the funniest or the smartest in class, but you are something else.

We don’t have to be the most or the best to deserve a place. And I say this even though there are a few handfuls here tonight who excel in culture and sports.

You are a huge inspiration – and I love both watching and playing sports – but I would never step onto the field if I demanded of myself to be at your level.

Think about how much we miss out on if we don’t dare to try new things. We don’t need to be a prodigy to participate or have fun. We can practice and aim to win, but we are more than our defeats and victories, no matter which field they occur on.

Of course, I want to be the best possible heir to the throne, but I will definitely make mistakes. Maybe not with holes in my socks on my first official visit… Dad… but it will be something else.

I can’t deliver perfection, because what is perfection anyway, but I can promise dedication. I will give everything I have and learn everything I can.

Dear mom and dad, you have always taken care of me and Isabella, Vincent, and Josephine. Everyone in our family knows we can turn to each other and find strength right there. If one is low on energy, there is always someone else in the family who has extra.

We rely on each other because we have always been able to rely on you. Like when I had to give a speech to my godson in Berleburg a couple of months ago. Without a word, you got me up at the right time despite the nerves. You have always guided and given freedom. You have always allowed me to take one step at a time.

Today is one of those steps. Many more will come. We become adults in a day, but we grow into adulthood over time.

I want to thank everyone who has been a part of celebrating me. Both those of you here and all those who have sent greetings and gifts. I will never forget today. But maybe I will remember it as less challenging already tomorrow.

I have to find my way, even if it leads to a familiar place. I have roots in many parts of the world, and I enjoy traveling. But home will always be here. Because I love my country.

I suggest that we all rise and raise a toast to the Kingdom of Denmark.
