Weird title. The EU is a union of sovereign states and Orban was democratically elected. What’s the EU supposed to do, send in the tanks a la USSR 1956.
The EU response is appropriately proportionate, cutting off funding to the Hungarian people as they continue to support this guy. But ultimately the question is why the Hungarian people allowed this to happen.
Perhaps the biggest failing of the EU is that the lines of responsibility aren’t clear enough, so everytime some random european politician decides to shit their pants, there’s that Eric Andre meme response of “why would the EU let this happen”.
