What do you think about the new city hall of Nicosia in the old city? I think that its design is really unfortunate considering the architectural character of the area.

Since so many Cypriots consider the historical architecture of the island as χαλαμάντουρα, is it really a surprise that any new major architectural project is a hypermodern design that has nothing to do with the historical influences on Cyprus?
It’s a pity they didn’t just repurpose the old buildings and continue to build “these modern” structures…
It’s not that bad tbh. Obvs they’re still working on it, but they’ve elevated some of the buildings to give pedestrian access, and there’s a bunch of space created now where the entrance is. Have in mind they spent like 10 years excavating the site before they could build anything and then had to adjust the plans to cater for it, so it’s not really a “new” design.
And lets face it, that area isn’t exactly full of architectural masterpieces. The entire other side of the street behind it is just a giant wall with barb wire on the top to protect the archbishop when he’s counting his money. The old municipal market building next door is a giant square concrete thing that’s not that old. And a lot of the buildings around it are the standard 60s/70s concrete modernist ones.
