So I frequently grab me a salad from the salad bar at Rewe, and they introduced these containers lately as an option. Lovely, much more environment-friendly! But how do you get the Pfand back on those? The automated “Rückgabe” machine is not prepared to deal with those AFAIK. And if you take them with you to return at the till when you pay, how is the cashier supposed to determine if you brought them with you or you just took new ones? Any info would be most welcome. Thanks!

Why don’t you ask a person at the Rewe..?
Why are you overthinking this?
They have a webpage explaining this in detail: https://www.rewe.de/service/mehrwegpfandsystem/
[Rewe’s official website](https://www.rewe.de/service/mehrwegpfandsystem/) has clear instructions on how to return them.
You should normally be able to feed them into the bottle return machines: make sure the lid is on the container and feed it in with the lid uppermost.
If the machines won’t take it, you can return it to a cashier. Yes, they’ll just have to take it on trust that you didn’t just grab it from the salad bar, but it’s a temporary measure until they can get the new machines in.

The Pfandautomaten at Rewe work for me, but they can take 5+ attempts. Lid on, upright at a slight angle so the conveyor belts pull them along.
As a side note, checking out with these is _always_ an adventure, as they don’t scan properly. The first time it took two managers to sort it out. Now I just tell the checker that it’s on their PLU list.
