Leeds test drive horror as £190,000 electric McLaren bursts into flames mile away from dealership

  1. Never mind the mileage to the dealer. The fact it’s burning is horrifying enough.

  2. Not as expensive, I suspect, as the diesel car that caught fire in Luton airports multistorey car park …

  3. My dad used to test drive cars just as a hobby… normal cars, not “supercars”. He made a point of stopping at an off license and picking up a case of beer then ostentatiously taking it out of the test car when he returned to the dealer.

This wasn’t out of necessity… he had his own car. He just did it to flummox the car dealers.

  4. Hmmm, was it the 3 litre petrol V6 engine that went up first, or the measly 7.2kwh battery? Their own story claims a witness saw the fire started in the rear engine compartment. More click bait headlines I think.

  5. So McLaren don’t make a pure ev so that’s guff from the start.

It’s a hybrid and the fire was out in 30min, which suggests the battery stayed intact and the safety systems did their job.

Fully fossil mclarens have had more than their fair share of thermal incidents and this particular model has been recalled for fuel leak risk in the past. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just carrying on the time honoured McLaren tradition of bursting into flames.

  6. Even local news are getting in on the EV misinformation.

  7. Oh dear how sad never mind.
I hope no one was hurt clearing all that scrap up.

  8. How much does Reach Media get from being lapdogs for the oil and gas industry? Or are they just being thick for free? They publish bollocks like this all over the country.

  9. I dunno. Seems like a pretty successful test drive in so much as it will have helped the driver make a decision.
