What ever happened to all the old lads with signs on city streets? Why were they never replaced?

  1. Practise dying out, boring and unmotivating job, probably paid a pittance in cash, out in all kinds of weather too.

  2. They were replaced by the internet, which was the successor to piped TV

  3. I wonder is that Donnacha the same as the poker player? One of Irelands best ever.

  4. I’d have liked to try that fried chicken.

I’m sure it’s the same as every other chipper. But I want to find out.

  5. Minimum wage rules, at a guess., combined with a crackdown on cash in hand/off the books jobs.

€11.30 an hour, 8 hrs a day, 6 days a week is €540/week + employers PRSI. Costs a lot less to run a business Facebook and Instagram page.

  6. My grandfather used to hold signs on Grafton Street back in the 80s. I couldn’t believe that was what he did for a living, but all the signs were there.

  7. There’s still a few in Cork. More middle aged than old though.

  8. I guess minimum wage went too high for the practice to be justified?
