I tend to fall down rabbit holes on YouTube watching people with metal detectors or magnet fishing for hours – all tend to be based in the States.
I know metal detecting is almost verboten here with few exceptions, although [this article from Agriland implies it’s only possible on private lands not designated as heritage sites](https://www.agriland.ie/farming-news/its-a-misconception-that-licences-are-always-needed-to-operate-metal-detectors-on-farmland/)
And [this link](https://www.museum.ie/en-IE/Collections-Research/The-Law-on-Metal-Detecting-in-Ireland) sets out the rules.
As they deem “archaeological material” to be items as simple as coins dating to the 20th century – is there a loophole implied that searching for a mobile phone or drone (ie something “modern” on private land is ok?
As for magnet fishing, it does seem to be common enough in Ireland now and and I haven’t yet found anything to imply it’s illegal
Anyone engage in either hobby?

Reading the rules on the link you posted. Never knew it was so strict !!
This one got me:
>It is against the law to engage in general searches for archaeological objects in Ireland using a metal detecting device
If you were reported or caught, couldn’t you just say you weren’t looking for “archaeological objects” ???
When it comes to magnet fishing. Let’s say you pull out an old trolley. What do you do with it then ? Launch it back in the water ? While not technically dumping. It’s still a pretty irresponsible to do.
It’s not uncommon here to metal detect a site that’s about to be built on, to check for weapons, but really depends where
This really annoys me, I’d love to go metal detecting. I understand the sentiment of the law, but it’s unnecessarily restrictive. They should have a system where it’s only legal if you’re a registered metal detector. That way, few bob for the government, responsible volunteers out making discoveries, and still possible to charge people who do it illegally
I seen a guy online earlier. You need a licence and searching for stuff without one is like a fine of 100000. Could be wrong so don’t downvote in oblivion.
