This afternoon the full House is expected to have another vote (or votes) to chose the Speaker, without whom the House can conduct essentially no business. Some Republican Representatives are indicating that they will not back Jordan for Speaker despite his nomination within the caucus; whether there are enough to block him from the Speakership – and what happens after that – remains to be seen. In addition to his own, Jordan requires 217 Republican votes to reach the Speakership. The House Democratic Caucus is expected to remain consolidated behind House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

  1. Think Jordan can win?

    Also accepting guesses for how many rounds this will last

  2. Place your bets here!

    1) Does Jordan win the Speakership today, and

    2) How many rounds does it take before today’s voting concludes (one way or the other)?

  3. I hearby declare my candidacy for Speaker. If you vote for me, I can promise not to be Jim Jordan.

  4. What do his fellow Republicans say, ostensibly, about why he’s their choice?

  5. I low-key want to see Jordan win just for the satisfaction of someone who is so used to lobbing bombs at leadership and disrupting basic functions of operation get into the hot seat and fall apart.

  6. I’m optimistic that it’s a clean vote. They are bringing this to the floor and they’ve already been embarrassed enough behind closed doors. I assume they have their behaviors in check to try and at least show a veneer of basic civility.

  7. I hope he goes down in flames and somehow learns to feel embarrassment. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

  8. So is it Jordan without a doubt? No way the Republicans, or at least the temp speaker, are dumb enough to actually schedule and hold a vote that could result in anything else? They would be laughed out the room. Oh wait…

  9. Don’t want to be a downer but I don’t think this is going to be as exciting as everyone is hoping. Think Gym gets it on the first try and Dems will just campaign heavily that Republicans elected an insurrectionist who shields sexual harassers as the Speaker after Repubs almost caused a government shutdown.

  10. According to the Salon article:

    * 5 Hard No
    * 5 Leaning no
    * 2 – 3 undecided

    I fully expect them to cave but interesting to still see a few hold outs.

  11. I’m going to take the unhinged route and guess he wins with less than 3 rounds

  12. You don’t have the votes.

    you don’t have the votes.

    You’re gonna need congressional approval and you don’t have the votes.

    (at least I hope that’s the case…)

  13. Imagine Jim Jordan is going to the Floor Vote without actually getting all the GOP votes locked down? It’s going to take, what, 8 ‘present’ votes from the GOP for the Democrats’ House Minority Leader to be named Speaker of the House? Quite a risk Jim is running if he doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing…

  14. From a Politico congressional reporter:

    https://twitter.com/Olivia_Beavers/status/1714291751203282992

    >“I get the impression the line is holding,” said one House Republican of the Jordan holdouts.

    >They noted some members gave “tricky answers” re. their support for Jordan, indicating they may not support him on subsequent ballots after the 1st one at conference yday

  15. Real question. If GOP decides that Jordan doesn’t have the votes but Hakeem Jeffries does, can the Speaker Pro Tempore hold off on holding a vote indefinitely?

  16. Let’s the games begin! I hope Jordan is voted down so hard he can never even get a gym teaching job again.

  17. Relinquishing the gavel to Hakeem would be less embarrassing for this circus of GOP representatives than continuing to pretend they can govern.
