A total of 20 House Republicans denied Rep. Jim Jordan the House speakership Tuesday in the first floor election for the vacant role since Kevin McCarthy was voted out two weeks ago. An official tally was still being taken by the clerk.
Jordan, a conservative Ohio Republican who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, fell 16 votes short of the 217 needed to win the speaker’s gavel, at least on the first ballot.He is expected to force votes on subsequent ballots in an effort to wear his opponents down and win them over, according to a source familiar with Jordan’s thinking.
But for now, as it has for two full weeks, the House remains without a permanent speaker, unable to pass legislation as the government is set to run out of funding in a month and with U.S. allies Israel and Ukraine at war and seeking aid.
In total, 20 Republicans did not vote for Jordan on the first ballot. Most voted for either McCarthy of California or House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Lousiana, who beat Jordan in the first party nominating contest for speaker before dropping out after it was clear he did not have enough support to win a floor election.
All Democrats voted for their top leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., to be speaker.
20 “Other” votes, the hold outs want what? Just vote for democracy and pick Jeffries then get all the Moderates in your district and the hardliners will become less a pain in your backside.
Interesting how all Democrats can stand in unity behind one of their own but the Republicans cannot.
Does this suggest that the Republican party is actually now multiple parties trying to coexist as one party? It looks like the Republican party has such extreme edges that moderate Republicans (who are extreme to Democrats) don’t have much in common with extreme Republicans (who are batshit crazy to Democrats or anyone with a functioning brain).
Republicans can’t even elect a speaker from their own party when they hold a majority and we expect them to be able to handle business that is in the nation’s best interests??

What the House members have learned is that a slim number of votes can get you more concessions from your leadership. Any slim number of five votes would be enough to shoot Jordan down. Jeffries could pull a surprise move (highly unlikely) to bring Kevin back for the CR, aid to Ukraine and Israel, then to vacate the chair. Rs prefer no government right now.

It probably won’t happen, but if a reasonable republican agreed to give the Dems at least a little influence and ability for bringing bills to the floor, they could be the next speaker with only a handful of republican votes. When McCarthy swore he would never compromise at all with democrats, he sealed his fate.
I’m having entirely too much fun watching this. It’s bringing a deep kind of joy to me.
