I’m sorry if this has been discussed before, but could someone explain the motivation for having these referendums? Normally both sides negotiate to make the questions as neutral as possible, but here it is obvious that only one side has taken part in them. It’s kind of an authoritarian vibe to them, don’t you think?
Btw, I was born and raised in Sweden so I’m definitely aware of our shortcomings. Also, my mom is Polish, been to Poland a bunch of times during the 80s and 90s. It makes me happy that Poland has made so much progress since then.
This is copied from Wikipedia. Would you say the translations are fair?

1. “Do you support the \[selling off of state assets to foreign entities\]([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privatization](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privatization)), leading to the loss of Poles’ control over strategic sectors of the economy?”\[\[a\]\]([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023\_Polish\_referendum#cite\_note-7](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Polish_referendum#cite_note-7))
Yes, I’m happy to sell assets making Poland lose control over strategic sectors?! Like what the hell.
2. “Do you support an increase in the retirement age, including the restoration of the increased retirement age to 67 for men and women?”\[\[b\]\]([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023\_Polish\_referendum#cite\_note-8](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Polish_referendum#cite_note-8))
I don’t know that much about Polish domestic politics but I assume that this is probably something that has to be done. To me, this makes 1% sense, maybe.
3. “Do you support the removal of the \[barrier\]([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarus%E2%80%93Poland\_border\_barrier](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarus%E2%80%93Poland_border_barrier)) on the border between \[Poland\]([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland)) and \[Belarus\]([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarus))?”\[\[c\]\]([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023\_Polish\_referendum#cite\_note-9](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Polish_referendum#cite_note-9))
What pole is for removing that barrier?! Why have a referendum here?
4. Do you support the admission of thousands of illegal immigrants from the Middle East and Africa, in accordance with the forced relocation mechanism imposed by the \[European\]([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European\_Union](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union)) bureaucracy?”\[\[d\]\]([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023\_Polish\_referendum#cite\_note-10](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Polish_referendum#cite_note-10))
Are you in agreement with the cultural Marxist left, EU bureaucrats, and George Soros for mass immigration of \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*? You fill in the blanks.
Yes, That’s a joke!

The agenda was to have increased funds to compaign. Separate budget from elections budget.
This was rigged from the start. PIS used the ‘referendum’ to:
* run smear campaign against the opposition which, allegedly, supported selling off assets, admission of immigrants etc (they did not).
* get additional support (financial, logistic and press/tv) in election campaign, which was marketed as ‘referendum campaign’. This was to overcome election campaign funding limits.
* mobilize their own electorate.
