My mother bought supplies for her business and would get them sent down from Dublin. They would send an invoice that she would pay by cheque to clear it.
The final invoice she got she clear but over paid by €0.02. For the best part of a decade after, every month she would get a statement in the post from them saying her account was €0.02 in credit.
The money they must have spent on stamps, paper and envelopes in this time. I don’t know how, when or why they stopped.
