Don’t trust individual polls, even ones you like, but this makes intuitive sense to me. There are plenty of people looking for alternatives to Trump and Biden, but if you’re a Democrat RFK looks worse than Biden in every way except age. If you’re a Republican he looks like Trump with less baggage, which could appeal to people who are quietly sick of Trump but could also never vote Democrat.
Don’t forget, by election day DeSantis and all the other “Trump without the baggage” candidates will be long forgotten – RFK would never beat Trump in a GOP primary, but as an independent he doesn’t have to. All he needs is to not go bankrupt and he’ll to pick up a couple percent of votes, mostly from folks who would otherwise have backed Trump.
I’m glad that RFK JR exists.
