Hi everyone,
I saw this image trending on a Belgium /r in Dutch, and decided to translate to English to see what you guys think about this complex paradox as Europeans. Thoughts?

  1. There is a reason why the Middle East is a shit hole, im from there, i know. It’s the people.

if you bring the people to europe, you’ll become the new Middle East.

  2. Will this impact the way you will vote during the next European elections? Why/Why Not?

  3. You cannot tolerate intolerance, agreed.

On the other hand this poster is essentially blanket stamping migrants as blatant IS members.

  4. We probably had something between 500 and 1000 victims of islamic terrorism in the last 20 years. Churches burned, people run over with trucks…no one did shit, everyone who called for action was labled a terrorism. The moment they touched couple synagogues and made anti semitic demostration public opinion and politicians woke up, and started to talk about “the islamist propblem in Europe”.

Don’t know you, but it rings couple of bells.

  5. In the United States, immigrants are more likely to have a job and less likely to commit crimes than people who were born there. If this comic was presented there, it would represent intentionally inaccurate and xenophobic propaganda.

I’m curious if Europe has similar numbers, but not curious enough to do any further research.

edit: /u/inquisitorkek blocked me for this post, but continues to reply to me and people who are replying to me. That’s a fun way of abusing reddit mechanics to control a conversation, but it’s far from the intellectually honest person he pretends to be.

  6. The ones making and distributing these posters clearly are intolerant. Are you telling us we shouldn’t tolerate those either?

  7. Let’s be honest, we’re hypocrites who make detrimetal concessions at any possible point.

There is a huge difference between acceptance and toleration. You never tolerate a good thing, only the bad.

We should’ve focused on making acceptance the main tenant of our social policies while we only set ourselves at tolerating something that we ourselves knew was bad. Then you can’t wonder why something blows up in your face.

  8. People pretend Europe’s earth (the ground) is magical.

If you take an entire village of savages and you airlift them to say France, the savages do not magically become European because they are now standing on French soil.

Likewise if I move tomorrow to China, that doesn’t make me Chinese.

  9. I feel sad. First of all for the victims. Second for posters like this. Nobody ever said we should tolerate intolerance. And most terrorism only creates more intolerance. Things like the Hanau shootings are terrible, but not a reason to silence all right wing people.

  10. Ah, I see the far right propaganda is in full force.

This is a straw man fallacy right there, no one wants to accept ISIS members into Europe.

The authors of the image are implying that all Arabs muslims are extremist, and we shouldn’t let them in. Which is wrong, not all Arabs are bad, just like not all native Europeans are good, there are intolerant people everywhere.

for instance, the authors of this image are intolerant themselves. Should we tolerate their intolerance?

  11. Yeah, yeah. Numerous times “poor immigrants” were burning EU flag, flags of France, Belgium, Netherland, Germany… also, they were screaming and calling for the holy war, supporting morally and verbally terrorists… And how many you declared persona non-grata? Zero to nothing.
They love EU for the free welfare, but otherwise they hate every other aspect of it.
And EU is not dealing with religious fanatics because other will paint it as “intolerance” and hate against a specific religious group.

  12. I am litterally begging for a party that is liberal social democratic party that is anti immigration from outside western world. But of course they are all Russian sponsored anti democractic hate speech, religious nuthousers.

  13. Being tolerant of intolerance will be the deathblow to our liberal world order if we continue on this path

  14. It is to late. Even if we stop all immigration from these countries, there is still millions of them in Europe and they have insane birth rates.

  15. >It’s paradoxical, but in a tolerant society, we cannot tolerate intolerance.

    Very well put.

  16. Seeing intolerant right-wingers talk about the paradox of tolerance, when they can’t wrap their heads around basic shit like trans people or feminism, is hilarious.

This isn’t the paradox of tolerance. This is “in-group vs out-group” politics reframed.

  17. I refuse to believe there isn’t a techocratic solution to filter the extremists from the normal ones. Compared to the millions of refugees there are probably just a few hundred actually dangerous ones an probably just a dozend of people who actually plan an execute attacks. Those are the people we need to identify.

  18. It’s not a paradox, it’s just an excuse for you to impose your views on others.

You want to live in a free and tolerant society? Then you need to recognize that others don’t have your views, and that’s ok.

  19. I think this comic is a huge generalization, it is implying that all middle eastern people or Muslims are bad. Out of all the Muslims I have met so far (in India and Europe mainly), around 40-50% are religious i.e. they actively practice the religion, like praying few times a day, wearing headscarves, not eating pork etc., but none of them as far as I know are terrorists or support terrorism, I am myself an atheist, but I don’t hate people who are religious unless they are trying to impose their religion on me or others.

Here, I am not implying that we should tolerate terrorism, we should decide case by case basis, if someone has a criminal record or association with a terrorist group, then they should not be allowed in the country, whether they are refugees from the Middle East or Ukraine or South America. We should also have some other rules that if a refugee comes here, then they should be given some deadlines (like 5 years or so) to be able to stand on their feet and learn the local language, throughout this process they should also receive the help that they need, a lot of people from war stricken countries have mental health issues, lack of job, help and guidance are probably also the reasons why people turn to terrorism and other crimes.

  20. The Belgian government portrayed as a badass lion, of all things? Until they do something *TANGIBLE* about this situation that clearly spiraled out of *their* control, they’re more like a cute little helpless cat.

Memes and words are one thing, but if you want to be a lion, bring *actions* and *results* to the table.

  21. The premise that all immigrants are intolerant is already wrong. This is straight up Nazi propaganda.

  22. This is extremely racist and BIAS. Jesus Christ.

This is coming from a far right dude and it has nothing to do with the real problem.

  23. How is this hate propaganda not being deleted? Mods?

  24. Let´s see:

Western and Central África: French and Belgian colonies.

The Maghreb: Former French colonial playground.

Former Ottoman Levant: Intervened and colonised by the British and the French.

Afghanistan: Battleground of Russians and Brits

Somalia: Partitioned between Italians and Brits

Iraq: ~~Invaded, destroyed~~ Brought democracy ¨and left in the hands of warlords by the US

    Lybia: Another former European colony.

Hmmm….wonder what´s the reason all of those peoples need to leave their countries and come *especifically to Europe. (In truth there´s way more displaced people within the MENA region than in Europe)*

  25. Both sides in this conflict are incredibly intolerant so I’m not sure this poster applies. Both Israel and Palestine have committed multiple truly evil acts over a protracted time period. Both sides are very bad.

  26. All I know is that people are going from one extreme to another and I don’t like it…

  27. People arent tolerant of the intolerant… unless they are muslim, gay, disabled or black/jewish.

Be intolerant towards intolerant muslim, gay, disabled or black/jewish and youre one of the following: islamo-/homo-(phobe)/biggot/racist and must be canceled, have all your wealth taken away and given to the poor, shops and cars must be burned, maybe some knifes stuck inside bodies, pyrotechnics.

  28. It’s not new. We’ve said the same about Nazis and the same goes for militant extremists of any flavour that use violence to express their intolerance.

However, we must be careful not to vote in Nazis so they can take care of it for us. We need to meet the challenge in the centre of the political spectrum, because that is where we have failed.

  29. Ahhh, hatred and racism are growing up and trying to look reasonable and respectable.

  30. People are always pointing this out and of course there is some merit to them worrying, but what really can we do, without turning to barbary ourselves? How should we deal with west-hating people who live here? Deport them? Where? Would you like to build camps? Same with the EU borders. Of course its possible to try and shoot everyone who wants in. But wouldn’t we lose our own civilization once we resort to these barbaric measures? Some people have suggested taking the right to asylum out of the ECHR. But I think if Human Rights are up for debate, that kinda defeats the purpose of them being universal. So abolishing singular Human Rights would mean abolishing Human Rights altogether.

Of course they should enforce deportations better, and have a more efficient system of criminal justice. Maybe even more heavily armed policing in ghettos. Denmark has an interesting policy of avoiding ghettoization. Although I don’t know if it works in practice. In the end I wonder if scapegoating immigrants without having an actual measure to tackle the issues does more harm than good.

  31. What is this xenophobic right winged fascist malarkey????
