  1. Their air defense is shit. They lack good radar surveillance by now, so it’s likely they didn’t know something was coming until after the impact

I may be misunderstanding the capacity for air raid detection, but one of the aspects of what makes ATACMS so valuable for Ukraine is the aspect that they do not require a jet to fire, removing the ability for Russians to begin an alert of possible incoming missiles due to detecting Ukrainian jets in the air.

    If instead you can fire from a much closer location directly (like from a HIMARS in Kherson for example) you are able to suddenly have a missile incoming on a target without any prior warning.

    Again, that could be something an air raid alarm may be able to detect, but it seemed plausible to me, especially considering the confirmation of other ATACMS missiles being used elsewhere.
