  1. So long as they’re not relying on benefits then why care? To boost economic activity I suppose, but you can’t force people to.

  2. At the end of the day, it comes down to the question whether we are a compassionate society or not.

If somebody falls on hard times (and it does not matter whether it is through the own fault or not), do we help them to continue an acceptable life, and do we help them to get back on top of things? Or do we tell them “Sorry, mate, your problem. Survival of the fittest, you know, and we do leave a man behind.”

Most European societies have chosen the former, while the US has chosen the later path. The UK is as always divided, but increasingly leaning towards the US approach.

  3. Yeah, it’s definitely an issue and greater flexibility in the work place due to more remote and hybrid working following the pandemic, should, in theory, be bringing those numbers down.

The numbers around long term sickness in particular are very concerning.

I’d agree localism probably plays an important role in bringing these numbers down.

  4. With pip payments on top of job seekers allowance our welfare payments compare very reasonably with other countries.

  5. What needs be be ‘rethought’ is the notion that someone could not possibly have anything better to do with their lives than exchange their labour for money, and that it is an urgent matter for government bodies to expend our tax money in finding work for them to do.

  6. I understand that people don’t want to support the “lazy” types that through their own fault end up in poverty, I mean it’s a popular story, spun by the media and state.

But it’s a story spun by wealthy types, not wanting to pay tax. The working/middle class who will be living next to this growing poverty class, will be footing the bill in the rise of crime and begging etc.

So yeah, tax the rich a bit more please.

  7. >It noted that many people who are fit for work and want a job are not eligible for support from jobcentres as they do not claim out-of-work benefits, leading to vacancies remaining unfilled.

You don’t need permission from the job centre to get a job. People travel 10k miles to be here and find work. Perhaps there is a learned helplessness amongst the long term unemployed.

  8. The Tories want to make support so terrible people are forced to take any exploitative job on offer so the Tory’s paymasters don’t have to raise wages. Their system is working exactly as planned. It won’t change until money stops controlling the system to completely.

  9. They’ve already made amazing improvements in service! Now it’s Job Centre **PLUS**. There, fixed it
