Naomi O’Leary: Why don’t many on the left see Russia as a colonial power?

  1. Ideological subversion. Legit “how many fingers am I holding up” level shit. Weaponized “whataboutery”, channelled through useful idiots, bot armies and soon to be, AI. Communism may be dead in Russia but the virulent anti-Western axis its help to create is still very much alive and growing.

Russia and China have managed to weaken The West from the inside out, so it loses faith and confidence in itself, allowing them to further their geopolitical goals. This whole Israel Gaza situation will make Trump or Brexit squabbles look like a playground scrap.

Putin just has to wait the West out, add another mass wave of Palestinian refugees on top of rising inflation and Europe may very well tap out and sell Ukraine down the river.

  2. Because it’s all relative. Russia is and always has been demonized beyond what seems reasonable to the average person in terms of what they can actually see happening in Russia, while America has been deified beyond what seems reasonable to the average person in terms of what they can *plainly* see happening in America everyday.

Lies on both sides. Good guys do bad things and bad guys do good things. Meanwhile, the truth is somewhere in the middle gasping for oxygen like Arny at the end of Total Recall.

  3. What I don’t understand is why so many can’t see Israel is a colonial outpost of the USA.

  4. Why is it okay to use leading questions as title of an article?

  5. To large extent it’s more that people on the left are more concerned with opposing their own ruling class rather than the ruling class of “the enemy”.

Basically you are responsible for your own actions and what you can affect/control.

  6. Ughh, are we getting American-style ‘Left vs. Right’ from the Irishtimes now?

I expect a lack of nuance about everything from the internet, but if journalism wants to be respected I reckon it should keep its head above the noise.

When people want hot-takes they can just swipe around twitter.

  7. The left is quite large and has several opinions on Russia and its war in Ukraine. Large parts of the left saw the Soviet union as a colonial power. Are there tankies on the left? Yes. But there’s tankies on the right too.
Why doesn’t the right treat the gulf states as absolute dictatorships and refuse to trade with them, boycott them in all sports etc? Because a question like that doesn’t lead to anything but scoring cheap points.
