Young people of 16 years and older can now vote in the European elections

  1. 16 year olds don’t know anything about the world yet. I can only see this being positive for Groen and the SPA for tons of these naive sheep will flock to them. *barf*

  2. How will they reconcile 16-18 having right to vote while 18+ is obligated to come to vote? This is discrimination based on age.

  3. What people don’t seem to understand is that it is votersright, not duty.

Most 16yo might not be into politics and would not want to vote yet, but as soon as this is approved, every single 16 or 17yo that wants to can do so. In short, only the ones interested in politics will vote. Noone loses anything, some kids will win.

  4. As a sixteen-year old, that is a bit involved with european politics. I believe this is great news, sure we might not have figured out all of our political views, or have enough perspective on these matters. But I know sure as hell 18 year olds don’t either and It’s just a matter of where you draw the line. We see that today more and more teens are getting involved or at least trying to understand politics. Personally I always found it furiating that politicians are making decisions about the youth, while we have no say in who will make these decisions.

  5. Two points

    – it is not about how they vote, it is about adding them as a demographic, forcing politicians to care about them. This is good.

    – As long as the European parliament can’t introduce legislation like any other parliament, the institution remains deeply democratically flawed. This is the real issue. Not adding some thousands potential voters in one small member state.

  6. I was way past 20 when I could decipher most of the junk. Still not all. Modern day communication is too slippery for young souls.

  7. De federale ministerraad weet dat die enkele jongeren op hun partijen zullen stemmen. Ze kunnen zich natuurlijk ook helemaal misrekend hebben.

  8. Luckily the European Parliament isn’t relevant…

People should get to vote according to how much taxes they pay. That would be fair, give an incentive to the rich to pay taxes, and give a weapon to the middle class that is getting fucked by the rich and the poor.

  9. So why is this a bad idea? Are you all against democracy? Now they also should implement politics in school, I had one lesson about the current political state but that need to be more.

  10. 16 years olds are too young. They haven’t experienced life yet. I remember what I was like at sixteen, very radical. I’m not old yet by any measure, but by having to take care of myself, I’ve learned that the world is less black and white as my younger self thought it was. I think the minimum age for voting should be 21-24.

For those wondering, I’m 26 now and I’ve had to vote three times already
