Allowing Taiwan to open office under its name was a mistake – Lithuanian president

  1. He had to coordinate with other countries.

Hopefully the new anti-cohercion EU legislation will be set up fast this year.

  2. Yet it is not a bad thing.

Maybe a mistake in very certain circumstances and with a short time frame view of the world it is a mistake. Tactics how to deal with it may certainly contain mistakes.

Yet on the other hand there is a telling example in an environment, where China is bullying Amazon and forcing it to only allow 5 star reviews to Chairman Xi-s book.

There may be very many mistakes happening navigating in this weird environment China is trying to force on us, but not being against that onslaught of idiocy and rejecting this is an ERROR not a mere mistake.

  3. It’s a case of the Chihuahua barking then runs back inside when the bigger dog shows it’s teeth. China showed it’s teeth and even the mighty EU knew that they won’t let one little doggo with no sense of politcs get in the way of billions of dollars of trade.

I thought there were plenty of countries using “Taiwanese rep office”. Some websites in the Netherlands for example listing it as Taiwan office or Taiwanese mission to the Hague. but their official name is Taipei representative office.

Yes I can finally understand the Chinese hissyfit and why they just didnt let it rest. Not that I agree, the CCP needs to get a life, but I get what the fuss is about.

  5. In case anyone assumes this is an official position from lithuania, the president has been at odds with the ruling government for more than a year. Basically any decision the government makes, he dislikes it, including the taiwan issue.

So basically this is nothing more than his own opinion, which i don’t think anyone should really care about. His previous “oppinions” included opposition to same-sex civil partnerships and drug decriminalization.

  6. Dumb move from the Lithuanian government. They should pay for it in the next election. It was not in the best interests of the Lithuanian people to play politics with China. Being a small country Lithuanian should stay back and milk both sides and wait for who going to end up on top. Not putting a big ass target on their backs.

  7. What a disgrace that “dog” is.

I’m using the term “dog” since the CCP referred to us this way and he’s clearly fine with it.

  8. Let’s just say that in Lithuania this president has more memes as any president before him.

The main idea from it: previous president woman – had balls, current president man – has no balls.

  9. Lithuania is on the good side of history with letting taiwan open an office called Taiwan, everywhere else are cowards and if every country decided to allow Taiwan to open and office together in Europe, Australia, U.K., USA, Japan, Korea, India etc etc then what’s ccp going to do? A big temper tantrum?

  10. What a stupid hill to die on from both sides over a name. If Lithuania really wanted to stand up to China, they should’ve opened full diplomatic relationships with Taiwan like 13 other countries.

For non-Lithuanian speakers, he at first says that we aren’t breaching the one-China policy and we aren’t recognizing Taiwan by opening a representative office and he says that they agree (President and government) about the opening of representative office and its unified Lithuania’s foreign politics. And then he says:

    >I don’t understand how the name of the representative office is the defining thing when we clearly state that it’s not an embassy and that the opening of representative office doesn’t mean the recognition of Taiwan.

Later on, he complains to news radio that they didn’t consult and ask him about the name of the representative office. This president literally has no opinion or I guess he has 2 of them always colliding with each other.

  12. This is an embarrassment news for Lithuania and the US.
No wonder the vote counts of this topics are being kept in the minimum in reddit.
