Share of population in EU countries that is attached to Europe, but not to the EU

  1. The numbers represent the number of respondents that expressed attachment to Europe, butexpressed no attachment to the EU, as a share of all respondents in the country. The country differences cannot be seen as indicators of pro- or anti-European sentiment. I would see it as a measure of “untapped potential” for the EU: Some people are attached to Europe and should be in general open to the idea of European integration, but for reasons I don’t know(and that likely differ from country to country) are not attached to the EU as it is.

I also made [two other maps for my Twitter](https://twitter.com/1047_eu) account: One that shows the share of respondents that express attachment to the EU, but no attachment to Europe. The other one shows the share of respondents that express attachment to both the EU and to Europe.

  2. So high numbers would actually represent low attachement to the EU as a political organization; while low numbers could either mean:

    – a population being equally not attached to the EU and to Europe

    – and a population equally very attached to the EU and to Europe

Edit: for instance, Spain is very attached ato the EU and to Europe (which makes sense given their recent history), while a third of Sweden population do not support the EU (they generally have the feeling that they give way more than they receive, and we saw that with their position on the Greek crisis a few years ago) but like the concept of Europe as a cultural block.
    (That’s just my interpretation here)
