  1. Blue represents the native Brittonic kingdoms whilst green represents the newly created Saxon Kingdoms.

Some powerful Brittonic kingdoms such as Alt Clut, Gododdin, Elmet, Pengwern and Dumnonia survived well into the 7th and 8th centuries.

The powerful Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex (West Seaxe) that would go on to create England under King Alfred was originally founded in the mid 5th century when, according to Anglo-Saxon chronicle, a powerful warlord named Cerdic disposed Natanleod who was a Romano-British king and then created the House of Wessex in Natanleod’s seat.

There is now debate about wether Cerdic was a Germanic who migrated over, or was actually a native Romano-British who renounced Christianity and converted to Saxon culture and language.

During this period there was a mass migration of land/farm owner Britons who fled to Dumnonia, Welsh Kingdoms and created a British colony in Amorica which became a safe haven for Britons fleeing Saxon invasion and later became known as Brittany.

Although a lot of Britons migrated away, most stayed and adapted to Anglo-Saxon culture, although the question does remain as to why Common-Brittonic language got zero language adoption in Old English, suggesting some form of cultural or language apartheid.
