Pope calls couples who choose pets over having children ‘selfish’

  1. If childless couples are selfish, what do you call a group of men who (theoretically) will not get married and therefore (again theoretically) not have children. I don’t know, every time I think this Pope might just be a force for good he comes out with shit like this.

  2. Who the hell wants children in the modern day world? And why? Also can we just get rid of religion already? It has served it’s purpose and we don’t need it anymore

  3. In Germany we say: “Clean in front of your own door with a broom.” Meaning, sort out your own shit first before you criticize others.

Edit: obviously he wants to encourage people to reproduce to have children so that the priests have various “supplies”.

  4. What? Selfish?

“And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.””

So we have multiplied all right, subdued almost every fucking inch of the earth, and now we’re selfish because of dominion over pets? Wasn’t that a part of the deal?

  5. Reproducing is something that is needed in order to prevent a species from extinction. I don’t believe that’s the case with humans. On the contrary, there are more than enough of us, and the number keeps growing significantly daily. Hence, not the (natural) resources that are needed to keep us all happy and healthy. Would that actually not mean having children nowadays is selfish (very generally speaking I don’t like to call people who do have kids, selfish).

  6. Look at the environmental cost of children.

I have nothing against having the brats, but the reality is that they are a huge cost on society, the environment and even personal happiness, all for no certain benefit.

It is a selfish choice to have them, maybe even shortsighted, but its hard to escape that they’re a central element to life. But lets not pretend that ots doing anyone any favours, a child is a massive investment and responsability most people treat like a throwaway social flex and personal ornament.

Now people who adopt children, those are people pulling the load of society, considering how poorly we treat orphans.

  7. > The pet keeping was “a denial of fatherhood and motherhood and diminishes us, takes away our humanity”, he suggested. The consequence was that “civilisation grows old without humanity because we lose the richness of fatherhood and motherhood, and it is the country that suffers”.

What also takes away humanity is the realisation that some of us can not afford children, and are not willing to risk raising them in poverty. Just for the sake of having children.

But no, it’s the couples selfishness that’s the is the issue here.

  8. there are 7 billion people and counting in this world. Pretty sure it’s more than enough to avoid extinction. Pope Francis should just admit that he wants couples to procreate so that the Catholic church has more ground troops. I highly doubt they really care if protestants, muslims or hindus have more children.

And if he wants more children, how about allowing priests to have their own family?
