I guess that’s where they probably purchase the content from but surely there are other content providers to tender?

I suppose we’re about to see how much of a priority the Welsh language is for the Welsh government.
For those who lack the time, transport or desire to go to formal classes, or the money for alternatives, DuoLingo is the only real way of learning Welsh as an adult.
In places where there’s no practical need to speak Welsh – like south Wales – you really do need to remove all barriers if you want people to learn.
A bit of a misleading title, it will still be perfectly usable, it just won’t keep being updated.

I started using Duolingo about 8 years ago. Twas great. It’s basically Candy Crush now. Get rid of it.

Tbf they’ve said in the article they’re going to continue running it, just not *update* it. The rate at which the Welsh language changes, in my experience, is very slow, and this won’t really be an issue.
People will still be able to learn Welsh on Duolingo.

Side note, have you noticed over the last few years that the word “vibrant” is now routinely trotted out as a meaningless adjective whenever people – especially local councils – describe anything to do with minority ethnicities/cultures and poor/working-class areas.
I’m learning Welsh to get the pronunciation of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch right. For reasons.
Duolingo has quite a few oddities beyond this, but I think it’s reliant on user input.
For example I can learn Klingon but not Tagalog which is used all over the World because of Filipino diaspora.
