  7. He keeps changing his reasoning like every other day. One day it’s about all the billions of migrants that supposedly come through Bulgaria and Romania (source: trust me bro), another day it has nothing to do with those countries and he’s just holding them hostage for unrelated reasons.

  11. American with a lot of interest in Europe here. Is there a real, justifiable reason for Austria to do this? Haven’t the concerns already been addressed by both Bulgaria and Romania? Will they do the same thing to future new accession countries? I’ve yet to understand this.

  14. Can other countries do, like a Schengen+ that excludes Austria with a pinky promise people will not use this to travel there without restrictions. I know this circumventing current laws regarding Schengen, that is the point.

  15. If Romania can into the Schengenzone, the travel time from Budapest to several Romanian cities by train can be cut by an hour. The border controls will taking a whole hour. It is now unattractive to travel to Romania by train, if Romania can into the Schengenzone, travelling by train to Romania can be more attractive. Thus, Austria, don’t Block Romanians desire to join the Schengenzone.

  20. Very easy. Austria is going to reliant on Russian gas transited through Bulgaria starting next year(when Ukraine’s contract expires). Bulgaria already put a 20% tax of Russian gas, and they can go up to Austria with a proposal. Normally, it would be simple: let us in and we’ll remove the tax. But revenge is in order. Bulgaria has enough leverage to go: let us in or the tax increases 10% every month we aren’t schengen. You’ll see how quickly the opposition drops if they do that.
