  1. That’s a supervillian type of biological warfare.

  2. Liberal democracies will always be at a disadvantage when it comes to disinformation from ennemy countries. It’s difficult to find a middle ground between preventing the spread of fake news and avoiding the side effects on freedom of expression.

  3. There were rumours circulating online that 40% of all french households have bed bugs. This is not true. There was a study made by Anses which [found that more than one in ten households in France are affected by bed bugs.](https://www.anses.fr/en/content/bed-bugs-quality-life-people-france)

Russia is just pouring fuel into a dumpster fire that has been brewing for a long time. They specifically try to hurt the tourist sector in France

  4. I’m laughing to myself because someone could *be behind bedbug hysteria*. I worked for a corporate pest control company. Bedbugs are are the worst pest of all and nearly impossible to get rid of. I had to sign multiple NDA’s because companies knew just how detrimental the news would be if it got out that they had bedbugs. Like it doesn’t take much work to cause a hysteria. It happens organically.

*This is also why I don’t go to movie theaters anymore*

  5. It started with *little green men* in Ukraine, and it ended with *little blood bugs* in France.

Our timeline is all wrong, we should never have killed harambe.

  6. Russia was trying to really get a lot out this propaganda. Blame Ukraine, damage tourism in France, and potentially damage attendance for the Olympics, which they have been excluded from.

  7. What is Russia not behind yet? For a third world country with tiny economy it has too much influence.

  8. I’m French , and i assure you , every newspaper and TV news chanel in France run the Bedbug stories for a month every day.

Even major newspaper like ‘ le Monde ‘ or ‘ le Figaro ‘ so honestly we didn’t need Russia on this one , just journalists who like clickbait articles and easy views.

  9. So Russian spies waste their time spreading false news about bedbug? I am sure the locals will appreciate less tourists will be around.

  10. We had just left Paris when the story started breaking worldwide

It seemed really sus since there wasn’t anything locally about it at all and then it was everywhere overnight

  11. I know people are laughing at this but Russian disinfo is a serious problem for all liberal democracies.

Every piece of Russian disinfo has an implicit goal. In this case goal is to undermine public support for Western sanctions against Russia by making us think that all our problems are because of the sanctions:

    >It (fake article) stated some insecticides had become unavailable due to sanctions on Russian chemicals. AFP also uncovered an article asserting that the spread of bedbugs was caused by Ukrainian refugees

  12. Wait we get Trump and christofascism but France got bedbugs propaganda?

  13. Man, governments just be blaming everything on Russia these days

  14. Great Scott, is there nothing the Russians will not stoop to?

    lOl

  15. If any western country has any little thing that can be blown out of proportion, you are functionally rock brained if you don’t think Russia has been fanning those flames.

  16. It’s a pretty huge blow to France because what it attacks is the image of Paris. I mean, yes, it has an image of being dirty, but it was still seen as the pinnacle of high society, fashion, and culture. In fact, that image is part of its branding and ties into millions, if not billions, of dollars of value, jobs, etc.

  17. Take nukes out of the picture, Russia doesn’t even stand a chance against fucking Ukraine! Who the hell do they think they are? My fucking dogs are a better army than their superpowerness

  18. I feel like war is at least moving from murder to *horrible itchy bug bites*.

In my lifetime I hope to see war reduced to *making book recommendations without appropriate trigger warnings*.

The Middle East will be swarming with readers.

  19. As far as being colossal dickheads with outside of the box thinking, the Russians really did a number if this is true

  20. Makes me wonder about the actual weaponized bed bugs that ran me out of NYC

  21. I mean ok, but this seems like an insanely petty thing for Russia to do.

  22. Just a guess but I’d not surprised to learn they are behind a lot the hysteria the world is experiencing lately.

  23. France I know you long for the days of your EU4 dominance. But it’s not happening anytime soon.

  24. French looking for any excuse for poor hygiene moment
